Storyline & Plot Development Empty
PostSubject: Storyline & Plot Development   Storyline & Plot Development EmptyThu Jan 10, 2013 8:46 pm

Base Concept: Eight generations ago, the first "Merger" was accomplished. A Merger is a symbiotic union between a spirit and a special "breed" of human called the Tyrael (Chosen). The Tyrael are revered in society because they are capable of performing the Merger, which in turn grants them the power of the spirit they merge with allowing them to perform magical feats. These powers start off in an infantile state but as the bond between the spirit and Tyrael grows stronger, so does the Tyrael's development and enhancement of the spirit's powers. The Tyrael will also gain access to more powers from the Spirit as they grow stronger together. The other factor that makes a Tyrael special is that they have the innate power to remain dominant in the Merger while a normal human possessed by a spirit, would have no control. A Tyrael has a longer lifespan and stronger/better natural attributes when compared to a human as well.

For roughly 3-4 Tyrael generations, a Merger only occurred when a Spirit found and chose a Tyrael to its liking. A ceremony was performed in order to ensure a smooth Merger. Once the Merger was completed, the Tyrael would cease to be a Tyrael and would become a Kotada, the title and "classification" given to a Tyrael who was bonded to a spirit. This bond would remain until the death of the Kotada at which point, the Spirit would chose to either rest, regain its independence, or choose another host. Within the Kotada, there are 3 different classifications based off of the "purity" of their bloodlines, which typically also speaks to the strength of their spirits. These are Common Kotada, Nobility Class Kotada, and Royal Class Kotada. Royals tend to only breed with other Royals or Nobility Class Kotada, this improves the likelihood of producing a Tyrael progeny. The Tyrael offspring of two Kotada inherits some of the power of the parents during the pregnancy. This is also affected by the strength of the bond between the parents and their respective spirits. While it is rare, there have been cases where the bond is so strong that if the father dies prior to the child's birth or if the mother dies during childbirth, then a Spirit has merged with the descendant of its previous Kotada.

It should be noted that not all Kotada + Kotada unions produce Tyrael offspring. There are often cases where two Kotada even two Royal class Kotada produce a human offspring. Those human progeny are often "exchanged" between the ruling houses of the Crests. Meaning a human nobility family that produces a Tyrael offspring will send their child to live with a Kotada nobility family and a Nobility Class or Royal Class Kotada couple will send their child to live with that human nobility family. While humans may choose to keep their Tyrael offspring, a Royal Class couple will most always send off their "failures" since Royals who produce multiple human offsprings are considered weaker and less worthy.

The Catalyst - a little over 3 Tyrael generations ago
Above was how things worked until a war between two of the Crests forced the desperate apprentice of a shaman whose village was caught in the middle of the conflict to attempt something long considered taboo and unthinkable. When one of the strongest warriors in the village was killed during a siege, his spirit having grown to truly love the village over the decades chose to lend its power to another Tyrael of the village. Since a shaman performs the rites of the Merger Ceremony, both the shaman and their apprentice were ineligible. The apprentice was known to be one of the strongest Tyrael in the village and an obvious choice for the one who would be able to tap into the spirit's powers fastest. Still, the law was the law and it was there to prevent a corrupt shaman from attempting to amass too much power. It was never broken because it was a law given to the Tyrael from the Ruling Council of the Spirits when the first Mergers were performed.

As the elders deliberated and the army continued taking losses, the apprentice took matters into his own hands. The spirit was being kept in the temple in order to heal it quickly and try to strengthen its powers. The apprentice encountered the Spirit and asked what should be done. The Spirit knowing the law and the apprentice knew the dilemma and told the apprentice that the law has never been broken and it is one that should never be broken. The Spirit told the apprentice that they would have to have faith that the Tyrael chosen to be his Kotada would be strong enough to protect the village. The apprentice knew who would be chosen and knew that the Spirit's optimism was misplaced, so with no witnesses, he did what he felt needed to be done. He began to perform the Merger Ritual himself. The Spirit could not encourage or condone what was being done, but he also could not escape as the healing process rendered him immobile. The apprentice failed five times before he finally succeeded.

While the Merger process was being completed and the apprentice was unconscious near the altar, the Shaman returned to find the spirit missing and her apprentice there. It was obvious what happened. It could have been covered up if the elders were not with her. They ordered her to expel the spirit from her apprentice and perform the ritual for the Tyrael they had selected. The apprentice woke up while the shaman defended him and with the powers of the Spirit, lifted into the sky. His words upon awakening have become legend. "I will accept my punishment AFTER I save our people and our village. Until then, pray that I was right and you were wrong about who should be merged." The apprentice flew out of the temple and headed straight for the battlefield. His ability to tap into the Spirit's powers were remarkable and unprecedented. It was as if he had somehow matched his will to that of the spirit prior to or during the Merger. The apprentice managed to help his village defend itself and force the enemy to retreat. The other faction that was approaching from the other side of the village had rumors of a powerful Kotada in the village and elected to travel around instead of attempting to pass through it or capture it for strategic positioning. He used his powers to help repair damage done to the village and even heal some of the wounded. The Elders knew that they could not punish him, so they forced him to give up his dream of becoming a Shaman. He protected the village for years until retiring with his family.

That is the tale of the first Domination. It would not be the last. Word escaped from the village of how a Tyrael was able to conquer and take over a spirit. What was done only in desperation and necessity became an obsession to those with "weak spirits" seeking to conquer stronger spirits. For nearly an entire generation, those who tried failed until a noble warlord of one of the Crests figured out why so many others had failed. Once the secret was learned, he used it to form his own organization to stand in defiance of the Authority. They became known as the Brokers. Over the two following generations, they practically perfected the art of capturing an unbonded spirit, extracting a spirit from their Kotada, or more importantly to a lot of their clients, implanting the essence and/or power of a spirit into a Kotada. What they had learned is that except in the rarest of cases, a Kotada's spirit becomes so ingrained in them that dominating another spirit will merely allow them to absorb their power, but a frog who conquers a wolf, will not become a wolf, but merely a stronger frog.

Government System:
The world is controlled by a psuedo-government known simply as "The Regime" who decree the laws which are then implemented and enforced by the Seven Great Factions known as the Seven Crests. The Regime typically stays in the background and resides in what is known as the Shroud, the true political seat of power in the land. It is located on an island in the center of the land that is covered by a magical mist from all sides hence its name. The land was originally split into seven territories of equal value based on size, resources, and overall sustainability and self-sufficiency. None of the territories could survive wholly without another. This was done purposefully by the "Last Emperor of the Regime" before he chose to shift the Regime's focus from overt power to being the invisible hand. This shift occurred when the Brokers began to amass more power and influence. The Crests knew where the true power lied as even the most ambitious and/or arrogant Royal Kotada of the Crests dared not challenge the Regime. The understanding is clear, the Crests have the amount of power that they have because the Regime gave it to them and the Regime can focus on their secret cold war with the Brokers because the Crests are ruling the territories. The Brokers actually need the Crests in power as well since ambitious Kotada Nobles and common Kotada are their primary clients. So as long as the Crests are in power and able to battle each other for position, there will be those seeking to gain an advantage through any and all means available.

In the case of disputes between the Factions, the Regime remains neutral except in extreme situations where one faction is amassing too many powerful Kotada. In situations where the Regime has to step in, the consequences are often swift and dire. Their control goes unquestioned because of this. So to be summoned to the Shroud outside of scheduled meetings and official business is a dreaded experience for even the ruling royals of both human and Kotada houses as it is a grave transgression to distract the Regime from what it does focus on, which is monitoring and policing the flow of Spirits and their powers. Among the Tyrael and Kotada, the Regime is a sort of boogeyman that parents tell their children to keep them behaving and as far as humans are concerned, they know that there is a force within the Kotada society that keeps them in line, but for the most part they believe it to just be part of their respective Crest's power structure.

Population Breakdown
Human = 70%
Unbonded Tyrael = 15%
Kotada = 10%
Nobility Class Kotada = 4%
Royal Class Kotada = 1%

The Tyrael and the Kotada

The Tyrael are basically hybrids. Essentially, they are humans, but their essence is different from normal humans in the sense that they can merge with a spirit. When this happens, the Tyrael becomes a Kotada. It is similar to when a youth matures into an adult in human terms. The most common way for a Tyrael to become a Kotada is simply to be selected by a spirit. The Human Consciousness is ALWAYS dominant. That's what makes the Kotada special and not just a possessed human. They have the "chi" or w/e to control and contain the spirit. Some Kotada are rumored to be half-breeds born out of the rare coupling between a spirit and a human. Some will be made by ritual of summoning the spirit to the Tyrael by a village. Tyrael & Kotada are basically like the samurai of the world in the sense that Tyrael are respected and protected for the most part. At the same time, since they can access the mystical, mythical, and/or magical powers of their spirit creature, they are also utilized as elite troops, so they tend to be "collected" when they are discovered and the family/village is thus protected. So for a village or family to give birth to a Tyrael is a great honor and they essentially transition to minor nobility. Families that produce Tyrael progeny often become upper nobility of their territory or village.

The power of a Kotada is directly tied to their Spirit. The Kotada of a Fire Spirit will hold an affinity with fire and often will be resistant and over time they can even become immune to fire. Aside from elemental powers, some spirits bestow heightened physical attributes or senses. Others grant defensive or healing magic. Some grant mental enhancement in the sense of greater capacity for learning, genius caliber expertise in specific areas. Raw spiritual energy can also be bestowed. A Merging with a raw energy spirit often serves as a major gift and hindrance for the Kotada. While it is highly unlikely that a "Water Kotada" will ever drown, a Kotada who utilizes raw spiritual or mental energy does not have such protection. A Psychic Kotada can still be struck mentally and is susceptible to natural headaches and/or migraines. Just as a "Raw Kotada" can be hurt by spiritual energy attacks.

NOTE: One significant aspect of Kotada powers that I want to set though is that dark powers do not make an evil Kotada. A Kotada that has necromancy powers doesn't have to be a death worshipper and the type to want to raise an army of skeletons to take over the world. They don't even have to think that the Underworld is a desirable place. Their powers could lead them to want to find ways to heal people and protect them from unnecessary deaths. Same would go for those who tap into dark energy, demonic or shadow powers, I want the lines between good and evil to be set by the individuals. Now some humans will still fear necros and Kotada of "dark spirits" but amongst the Tyrael, but they wouldn't shun them b/c they are still Kotada.

Tyrael have an enhanced aptitude for learning, bodily functions, and healing. Thus Tyrael have extended lifespans compared to normal humans. Even a Tyrael that is not bonded will live longer than a human. Their bodies also recover and heal faster than normal humans. Most Kotada, however, don't actually enjoy the extended lifespan given their utilization as warriors.

The Reaping - Stealing a Spirit

While this incident was created by necessity and desperation to save lives, over time, the ability to amass more power and abilities seduced more ambitious Kotada and Tyrael alike. Nearly a century after the Apprentice's Merger, some Kotada had grown proficient at a dangerous and outlawed practice called "The Reaping" in which a Kotada, or in rare cases a Tyrael, extracts and absorbs another Kotada's spirit. This often results in the death of the Kotada being reaped. It is very rare for a Kotada's primary spirit to ever change even when reaping a seemingly more powerful spirit. They will simply enhance their spirit with new powers or energy types or strengthening physical/spiritual attributes. A new spirit bond being formed thru a Reaping is typically only heard of a handful of times per generation.

Since this is the act of robbing a Kotada of such an integral part of their being as most Tyrael/Kotada who survive being the victim of a Reaping will never bond with a new spirit, most Tyrael/Kotada refuse to reap another even when they have defeated and/or killed them. They would often rather leave the spirit to re-enter the Great Cycle and select a new Tyrael to merge with.

For those who do not share this "principled view", there are some who have figured out how to trap a spirit in order to be peddled later. The Brokers are a very secretive black market organization that have amassed significant power and influence thru this practice. Those who do business with them learned early on in their known history that it is a horrible mistake to cross the Brokers. After all, they have access to an extensive catalog of spirits and thus potential powers and no qualms about to reaping a target.

Government System

The world is technically ruled by the Regime (also referred to as the Authority in these notes). In actuality, the land is actually ruled by the Seven Crests, which is the title of the Royal Houses that rule over the seven territories. The Seven are basically the Chief Vassals of the Emperor. They can be either human or Tyrael. Due to the Regime's "Cold War" with the Brokers, the normal, commonfolk of the populace believe the Regime's power base is weak, and often cannot understand why the Crests still bow to the Regime and fear a reprisal from it for a transgression.

Unaligned Villages: They can range from barbarians, outcasted villages, or villages that are used as a buffer zone.

Importance of Tyrael/Kotada to Each
Regime/Brokers: Locate and recruit Tyrael in order to advance their position against their counterpart. The Regime, however, also needs Tyrael/Kotada to fill its administrative ranks as well.
Crests: They know that the empire is falling apart, so they will have to defend their territories on their own. For the more ambitious lords, they are preparing for the likely civil war that seems to be looming as the Regime remains distracted and stretched thin with the Brokers.
Unaligned: The Tyrael/Kotada here protect the villages and also use their powers to enrich the lives of their village. Some, who are ruled by small warlords, mercenaries, bandit and such, try to recruit and hone their Kotada's skills in order to build up their power.

NOTE: Royal Kotada only marry other Royal or Upper Nobility Tyrael/Kotada in attempt to continue to strengthen the bloodlines and frequency of Tyrael birth.

Seven Crests
3 Royal Kotada
2 Royal Human - normal humans
2 Royal Human - non-Chosen branches of Royal Kotada families
- When a Royal Kotada gives birth to a normal human offspring, they are sent to these territories and families to remain upper nobility and royalty. Since the Royal Kotada are often viewed as closest to the Regime's Overlord/Emperor.

PostSubject: Re: Storyline & Plot Development   Storyline & Plot Development EmptyThu Jan 10, 2013 9:03 pm

Recruitment into The Sentinel Order of the Regime
Method 1: The original families and tribes that made up the Sentinel during the overt rule of the Regime continue with their mission of maintaining the balance of power. While some have had their overt power and influence weakened over the years, their devotion to their sacred duty from the founding of the Sentinel Order has not wavered. As such, the third and fourth offspring of the lower nobility are given to The Sentinel to train.

Method 2: Dishonored and/or disgraced noble families are often contacted a generation after their incidents. Given the reach of the Regime and thus the Sentinel, a deal is often struck to welcome a young offspring into The Sentinel in exchange for the Sentinel's help in removing the family's stigma. In other cases, if the family has been made destitute, financial aid is provided to help the family recover. The greater the stigma, the more Tyrael are sent to The Sentinel.

Method 3: The Sentinel has also been known to recruit from Outcast or Unaligned Villages quite often. Since the Sentinel tends to have outposts or front guilds and businesses in all territories, they are able to reach out to villages in order to find strong candidates from those areas. Financial or militaristic support and/or training are often the compensation to the unaligned. Often with the Outcast Villages, parents will offer up their children to allow them a chance at a life where the family/village stigma will not hinder them or their heirs.

Method 4: While unsanctioned intimacies within the Sentinel are heavily frowned upon, members of The Sentinel are not forbidden from bearing children. Children born Tyrael are often raised into The Sentinel. It is not mandatory, but if the parent who is a member of the Sentinel decides to keep them separate, the child must reside with the other parent. If the child is human, it resides with the other parent automatically.

The Sentinel's Infrastructure

1) The Sages (NPC only) - they would be the elders and spiritual leaders of the Order. Their Bond with their Spirits is so great that it is said that they can shift into a spirit form and have powers that would make the most battle-lusting Chosen freeze in trepidation. Due to their age and wisdom having seen many conflicts, they do not flex their power as they came to realize that subtly is their greatest weapon and has allowed the Order to survive for ages.

2) The Administrators (NPC only) - they carry out the will of the Sages and keep the Order running smoothly. While the Administrators are removed from battle, it has been the folly of multiple members of the military to think that they are weak just because of their non-combative roles. Several Administrators are former warriors who decided to utilize their non-martial skills for the betterment of the Order. The administrators handle all non-martial internal policy as well as its implementation.

3) The Cloaks - these are the information and resource gatherers. They range from traveling merchants to spies imbedded in different factions and regions. Their role is vital to the success of all threat neutralization operations. Not only are they the ones who gather intel for the Order, but they also sell and trade goods between villages and the Order. They are everywhere and nowhere at the same time.

4) The Corps - they are the problem solvers of the Order. They are primarily broken into 3 groups: the Blade, the Shield, and the Orb.
- The Blade is the assault aspect of the Order. When subtly will not work, this force is dispatched to quickly assault the enemy target and disappear. They are known for disguising themselves as an enemy or unknown force to maintain the myth/denial of the Order's existence.
- The Shield serves two primary functions. They protect the HQ and secret outposts or any "high profile Reaping targets". They also work secretly to ensure that anyone who is getting too close to uncovering the existence or whereabouts of the Order lose interest or get sent down the wrong path. While they will VERY rarely ever kill a target for getting too close, they have confiscated or destroyed research and evidence in the past.
- The Orb is the subtle option. While the Orb originally started out as the diplomatic arm of the Corps, it evolved with necessity. The Orb is the group now that will be sent to capture or neutralize major threats to order and the balance. They typically serve as an auxiliary force to either the Blade or Shield depending on the mission. Basically, they tend to be the covert element of militaristic operations.

Rename "The Brokers" to The Consortium.

Task: Develop the Brokers as an Organization more.

Concept: The "Fall of the Empire" was caused by a power struggle between a faction loyal to the Heir Apparent, who is considered too weak because of his very soft and kind demeanor, but is backed by a younger sibling who is a powerful Kotada, but extremely carefree (Meng Tian like from Kingdom 2). The Heir is opposed by an older cousin, who led an Order of the Empire that served as a special police force. Tension began to grow when reports start coming in that the Police Order have been stripping Kotada suspects of their powers without the due process. Things get worse when it is discovered that some members of this order were selling these powers on the black market. The confrontation erupted and the Sentinel sided as they always do with the Throne. The Special Police turned Brokers and the Sentinel thus begin a shadow war across the land.

The cousin and his faction are forced to flee from the Capital and seek refuge in an outlying territories where loyalty to the Throne isn't as strong as it should be. They move around from territory to territory to avoid being captured until relations between the outlying Crest 6, who had grown bolder and bolder in its stance of independence and disobedience to the Throne took them in and provided defense and aid to the Imperial Cousin.

The rift and loss of both a key militaristic order and key political figures led to a strain on the Empire, which would lead to the current state of its power. Since Imperial Royalty tends to be significantly stronger than Faction/Crest Royalty, they maintain their power, but the Crests are given far more autonomy since the Empire simply cannot police them or negotiate with them in the same capacity as before.

Currency
Keep it simple with coinage system on escalations of 10. Primary method of commerce is the barter system backed up by coinage system. Since non-metropolitan villages and stronghold are less inclined to use coinage as some don't fully understand their value, trading goods for goods or goods for services tends to be very straightforward. Each territory will prefer certain commodities over coinage (e.g. magic/science province preferring payments in conducive gems. In villages and strongholds of greater mercantile wealth and affluence, coinage is used more commonly than in more rural areas. Also, political hot spots circulate a larger amount of coinage as it makes favors and payoffs more difficult to trace.

Copper Shields (value of 1) - the most common currency. These coins are used for everyday transactions like groceries/food, short range transportation.
Silver Sceptres (value of 10) - less common than shields, but still in normal circulations. These tend to handle mid-sized transactions or bulk purchases of everyday goods.
Gold Thrones (value of 100) - thrones are used for large purchases. Average merchants rarely see gold thrones let alone transact with them. Smaller villages and strongholds pay their taxes and tributes in thrones. Most wealthy people own thrones as well. Armies are typically paid in gold thrones and then the currency is converted into smaller currencies at their regional treasury.
Platinum Crowns (value of 1000) - only governments, provincial institutions and the SUPER rich tend to have platinum crowns. Crowns are used to pay provincial taxes and tributes. They are also used for institutional transactions.

Territory Focuses
1) agriculture/farming
2) metal ore/mining
3) lumber
4) textiles/clothing
5) science/innovation/invention
6) military/mercenary
7) artisans/carpenters
8 ) diplomacy/politics
9) coastal ~ 2-3 territories
10) stone
11) gem mining
12) spycraft
13) merchant-heavy
14) smithing - weapons/armor

Crests
Faction 1: Royal Kotada
* a direct branch family of the Imperial faction in power; they are staunchly loyal to the Throne
Focus: 6, 8, 13

Faction 4: Royal Kotada
* the wildcard; no one seems to know where their allegiance truly lies and they are the master spies. Their intelligence network is embedded into all of the other crests and everyone knows it, but can't prove it. The Royalty of Crest 4 have ties and loyalties to both the Throne and the Exiles. Neither the Order nor the Brokers ever make a move against Crest 4. The most powerful figure in the leadership structure of this Crest is actually not the Lord, who is a cousin to the Exiled Duke, nor the Lady, who is in fact the leader of the Crest and niece of the Throne. The person most feared in this territory is the enigmatic Heir Apparent.
Focus: 12, 5, 6, 8

Faction 5: Royal Human - normal human
* The royalty of this territory has long-standing loyalty to the Imperial Regime as they were elevated based on their deeds and abilities despite being human. When the former leadership chose to back the Exiles, the current royalty rose up against them backed by the Regime and overthrew them. The Regime increased trade between the Capital and Crest 5's territory. Crest 5 is a beacon for extremely skilled craftsmen and smiths. They are arguably considered the best in the Empire when it comes to their designs and creations, especially when it comes to defensive warfare.
Focus: 4, 5, 7, 14

Faction 6: Royal Kotada
* often called the Exiled Crest as their open disdain for the Imperial Authority has weakened their standing with the Imperial Court, but they have gained the support of the "Opposition Faction". Their Lord is a former General who has done very well for her territory in peace-time, but she seems to long for a return to battle. Their society is set up much like Spartan society where strength is respected above all and the weak are discarded. They are very skilled with weaponmaking, both enchanted and normal. They have a lot of mines in their hills and mountains that are rich will metal ore deposits.
Focus: 6, 14, 2

Potential Opening Arc Plots for Main Storyline

1) Small-Medium scale battle. Either between the Order and the Brokers or with each group supporting two warring factions.

2) Political marriage between Crests on opposing sides that threatens to tip the power stability. Since it threatens both the Imperial Faction and the Exiles Faction, there's no telling who is behind the initial escalations or who actually tries to sabotage the engagement and wedding.
- one of the betrothed could get kidnapped or BOTH could get kidnapped separately with rumors of mishaps occurring during the bachelor(ette) parties.
- Crest 3 (Duke - 3rd son of the Crest Overlord) and Crest 5 (Princess - 2nd daughter of Crest Overlord)

All Crest Overlord will hold the official title of "Chiji" (Governor).

Royal Kotada Crest Overlords also hold the title of Koshaku (Duke).
Non-Tyrael royal human Overlords are called Shishaku (Viscount). Since they are descended from Kotada Nobility, they are given more respect, but they too are viewed as inferior to Kotada.
Normal, royal humans elevated to regency are called Danshaku (Baron). Despite being royalty in their respective territory, they are still viewed as "inferior" to most Kotada Nobility.

Kotada Nobility Ranking
Royalty Overlord = Koshaku (Duke)
Royalty = Kou (Marquis)
Upper Nobility = Haku (Count)
Mid Nobility = Shishaku (Viscount)
Lower Nobility = Danshaku (Baron or Kishi (Knight).
* This title is only given to first generation to Tyrael who have yet to prove themselves and/or Kotada viewed as having weak bloodlines. They still outrank all non-royal humans.
