.intro
The sun rose, hardly changing the stubborn gloom above Medius. The sky was gray when the sun when went down, and it was only a lighter grey now. The humans, relic hunters who lived like mice under the austere gaze of the owl, emerged from their hovels, their pickaxes sharpened for another day of digging and prayer. Prayer, lest a monster take another of their number.

Not far from the waking city, an elderly figure emerged. He was half as the diggers were, and half as the monsters. Nobody knew his true age, but he had been grey-haired and wrinkled since the Dawn. He hadn't always been so feeble, however. He knew this because of the bloodstained sword of power that he'd awoken with.

Fate in its cruelty rendered him unable to wield it again. Years of knowledge and experience had vaporized like dew with the rising sun. He knew that the younger, more ambitious entities that rose up with him would want the blade for themselves.

So as a last act, he used a lost and forbidden magic, an instinct in his blood granted to only his brothers and sisters, to form a great tower. It took every ounce of his soul to keep the spell over the sword's prison, and this energy prevented him from being able to defend himself. He was as a normal human.

And the day was coming soon when he'd be unable to maintain his soul's grip on his declining body.

The tower would live on, but he wished to see the warrior who would defeat the building's challenges before his dusk came. This hope awoke him with each unhappy dawn. He looked to the west, puffing serenely on his pipe. Today... yes... he had a good feeling about today.

The Dark Tower
A strange sense of foreboding filled Alicia that morning when she awoke in the dirty hovel she had been trying to rebuild. After a week or so of gathering supplies to fix the ruined house, it had become fairly obvious to the Knight that she had little to no idea what she was doing when it came to carpentry. As such, she had returned to the village where she had chased off several mercenaries yesterday to ask for assistance; but unfortunately they had no workers to spare, seeing as most of the men were out hunting for another week and the women were running the shops and tending the fields nearby. Tarim, the barkeeper Alicia had met, mentioned something about going through Medius and seeking help from one of the tribes therein, which the Knight begrudgingly agreed to.

The fallen city of Medius, it seemed, had some sort of pull upon the Knight, as if it wouldn't let her truly leave the place.

Emerging from the forest a few hours after dawn, Alicia headed east- toward a rather odd-looking spire in the distance. She had seen it the first time she had passed through this area, and having not seen the usual markings of bandits and the like (i.e. skulls on fenceposts, bodies hung from rafters, graffiti of the gang's symbol everywhere) took it as a local dwelling. After all, most of the towers within the city were destroyed or impossible to live in due to construction issues- and the fact that one rose to the heavens still, and in such good condition, could only mean that it was the property of a village of sorts... and if they had the wherewithal to build such a spire, they would have more than enough skill to help her build her hut, hopefully.

Yet, as she approached the edifice, she was fairly certain it was abandoned- or at least seldom used. She heard sounds of pickaxes and shovels in the distance, and was about to divert her course from the strange tower when she caught a whiff of sweet-smelling smoke coming from the same direction as the spire; a sign of civilization. On top of the smoke, Alicia also couldn't help but be curious about the huge thing stretching toward the heavens and she felt somehow drawn to the tower the closer she got to it; like it was calling out to her to explore it.

With curiosity overpowering the trepidation in her heart, Alicia picked up her pace slightly, intrigued by the spire and what mysteries it may hold.

.intro
The bushy-browed eyes of the elderly man squinted past his wide nose. He brought a hand up to stroke his long, white beard as he noticed a figure in the distance, gradually growing larger until he was sure it was a woman approaching his tower.

He didn't have much of a throat for shouting anymore, but he tried. Standing up, he cupped his hands about his mouth and cried out while she was still a considerable distance off.

"Madam!" he shouted weakly, coughing once. Like most old people, he held some old-fashioned notions of a woman's place and that place was as far from danger as possible. "Please, stay away from this tower. It is a cursed place! Don't come any nearer."

Death might come any moment. He seated himself back on the unusually large brick that he'd seated himself on prior. "It's dangerous." His voice faded to a much lower, shuddering sound. Age was not kind to him.

A flock of black vultures descended from the desaturated sky on an outcropping of the building.
It stretched up into the heavens, a full ten stories tall and covered all over with ugly statues of gargoyles vomiting water and kamikonjou falling from the sky. Its shade and hue matched that of the cheerless clouds above, and the architecture implied nothing good.

"I don't want to see a young lady harmed."

Of course, she had the option of just walking past him into the tower that called out with its seductive influence, wanting to use the power of the sword within as bait to trap even more souls within its vileness. The old man couldn't physically stop her from going in and couldn't stand up to block her, only cry out and warn.

Behind the old man were the massive metal doors of the ominous tower. Would Alicia ignore the old man's warnings and charge boldly inside?

The Dark Tower
An old man was the exact opposite of what she expected to find outside of the tower- much less an old man who kept warning her not to go inside of the place. She had always learned to respect her elders, but the simple fact that he was sitting directly outside of the tower- no matter how unsettling it was- proved that the place was safe- if creepy... or that the man was bound to whatever ruled the dark-place's will; though why a creature of darkness would go to any lengths to ensnare a mortal's soul to it's servitude just to leave him outside shouting at people to stay away made little sense to the Knight.

"I would say that you're right about this place being rather dangerous-looking..." She eyed one of the gargoyles that protruded out from the side of the building for a moment, studying it's scrutinizing gaze, "And, if it truly is as dangerous as you claim it to be, it's my duty to clear such a place out."

Pulling her bow off of her back, Alicia proceeded to string the weapon before returning her gaze to the tower. The place was massive- as she had anticipated it would be- with various sculptures and statues covering the various stories of the spire. She supposed that all of this was meant to intimidate people- physical depictions of the horrors within the tower, presumably. That being said, Alicia wasn't exactly the type to be easily scared from such things- and moved toward the door.

The elderly individual once again pleaded to Alicia as she approached the entrance, stating that he didn't want to see her get hurt. She laughed lightly at this, turning to the man and nodding, "You don't have to worry about me, sir- I can handle myself." Her tone was humble, understanding as to why he was concerned for her. Alicia herself was a bit worried that she would be at a slight disadvantage without her sword by her side- yet it was her place as a Knight to clear out such places as this dark tower.

Without another word, she walked past the man and entered the tower, ready to face what lay before her in the foreboding spire.

.the first floor
The doors shuddered open heavily. Their composition of a foot or so of yieldless metal gave them a distinctly ominous creak as they opened like the jaws of a beast ready to engulf the young knight.

Beyond the open gates stretched only darkness, and when the doors slammed shut behind her, they were as adamant as any wall.

The entire surroundings were coated in a blanket of black, as though the air were pitch. If the young knight listened, she might hear her footfalls on the surface. It was obviously metal or stone. There was a far-off scratching of some creatures... rats perhaps? But they were some several yards off. The almost imperceptible scrambling of roaches was nearer. The insects had been disturbed.

If she stooped to touch the ground, she'd find that the floor was perforated with several holes lined in metal, a few inches in diameter each and perhaps 6 inches apart from each other. Many of the roaches moved in and out of these holes, though they'd be invisible in the cover of darkness.

Beneath the hole-y ground, one could hear a far-off grinding noise, as though some ancient machinery were working beneath the surface.

If she walked forwards, she'd find more such perforated ground and darkness.

The Dark Tower
Torches would have been a good thing to bring on any sort of expedition into a dungeon. Hell, matches would have been better than nothing. Yet, Alicia walked into the tower, unprepared and unintelligible as to what lay within. She hadn't been expecting the blackness, that was for sure- and she couldn't turn back now that the door had closed behind her.

Perhaps the old man had been right?

She cursed loudly at her stupidity, striking the door with a fist while facing away from it in anger. Wasting no time- Alicia began chanting one of the few spells she knew- manifesting a blue, glowing shield that surrounded her person and lit up her surroundings slightly. It was no brighter than a small torch- but the light that streamed out of it gave her a three-hundred-sixty degree vision in a small radius at least. That being said, such a burst of sudden light momentarily blinded the Knight, who had forgotten to close her eyes before she finished casting the spell.

As her eyes adjusted to the light, Alicia heard the skittering of insects and small paws as well as the terrible grinding of some sort of machinery within. She looked about the room, her vision still focusing from the onslaught of photons her eyes took barely two seconds prior- hoping to find some hint as to where she had to go next within the accursed place.

.the first floor
The young knight's shield revealed the structure of the room. The metal of the floor carried the light further than it might have gone ordinarily, but did so in a manner that looked almost ghostly. The steady light revealed not only the rings of the floor, but the fact that, about thirty feet away, there was a trench that a person could easily fit in. Indeed, the trenches formed a grid that divided the rooms into square-shaped plateaus. The squares had flat, nondescript, x-shaped bridges on the corners to the other squares so one might traverse the room without ever falling into a trench. Not as visible would be the clean bones of failed adventurers that had tumbled off of the spikes into the trenches or been dragged there by the rodents. Several very large (10 inches tall) rats sat on their hind legs, their emaciated forms lined up in a perfect, patient row in the dikes as they waited for relief in the form of a fresh meal. They were obviously unhealthy. What was left of their fur hung off of their bones, and large, bald, scabbed-over swatches of skin only further advertised the sickness within. There was a possessive glint in their ruby-hued eyes, like children around a dinner table waiting for prayer to finish. Their countless heads and that hungry look on the bony creatures would be visible to Alicia for a brief moment before the quiet grinding escalated into a roar.

The churning machinations of the floor suddenly produced several 10-foot-tall spike-blades.

They sprang out of the floor with a 200 mile-per-hour burst of speed, shredding everything in their way, even the less fortunate of the roaches [Godlike speed, Destructive damage]. The rats had learned to stay in the trenches, for that was the only place in the room free of the intrusive spikes.

Fortunately, the shield did hinder the remorseless progress of the blades, though the magic likely failed to protect its wielder completely before it broke.

The spikes stayed in place for five seconds, and for a moment, the chamber was completely quiet.

And then they slowly sank back into the floor. The grinding resumed, quietly at first, but began to escalate towards the volume it was at when Alicia first entered the room.

On the far end of the room, a glyph glowed red when the spikes arose, but its light dimmed again when they receded. It would take about sixty seconds to traverse the room to that glyph at a full run with no interruptions.

Objective! Find the exit of the room before you die

The Dark Tower
Alicia quickly studied the room as her eyes adjusted to the light- noting the rats, the trenches, the platforms and the bridges that connected them. It was only after the hundreds of spikes erupted from the ground that Alicia understood what the holes by her feet were used for. Her spell was shattered instantly, sending Alicia reeling from the force of the blow. Her armor took quite a beating too from the steel spears, and how it was still intact after such an assault was somewhat confusing for Alicia- but she wasn't about to bitch about it- at least, not until she got the air back into her lungs.

Noting the glyph on the back wall as it went back out, Alicia began to chant the shield spell again, albeit, inbetween laborious gasps of air as she forced breath back into her lungs- as keeping a level head and her defenses up would keep her from being taken surprise by hundreds of deadly spikes and dying terribly via impalement... hopefully, anyway. After activating her shield, she picked her bow up off the ground, as it had fallen from her hands when she was struck by the trap- and drew an arrow from her quiver. Taking a few steps forward, she aimed at the one of the rats in the center of the grouping of them- loosing an arrow and hopefully scattering the starving creatures as she did so. As soon as she let the bolt fly, Alicia was moving- sprinting toward the nearest trench, which she was fairly certain didn't have spikes within them. Upon seeing over the lip of said trench as she got closer and noting the bones that had been picked clean inside of them, she was fairly certain that the rats would have to drag a corpse here after it had been killed on the spikes. That being said, she slowed down considerably as she approached the edge of the trench, waiting until the last possible moment to jump into it. Something didn't feel right about the bone-pits, and she didn't actually know how many rats there were... She was confident that her shield could protect her for the most part from the vermin- but they were rather big buggers, and she didn't have her sword anymore.

The last thing Alicia would want would be to be eaten alive by rats. Such a thing was hardly befitting of a warrior such as she.

Still- as she stood on the lip of the trench and listened to the cracking of the machinery get louder, she also studied the square platforms she had seen earlier- trying to see if there were any holes in on them and also why the rats were not on the bridges.

The skinny rodents were hardly phased by the arrows. In fact, the arrow nailed the central rat and pinned him to the corpses. His neighbors quickly and politely ate him, but the long line of rats didn't actually give in the slightest. Their beady, red eyes looked wistfully up at the woman warrior even as she stared over the lip into the bone-filled pit.

Only when Alicia jumped into the pit did the rodents move politely out of the way.

They still stared after her, those eyes of theirs full of disappointment and sadness that she hadn't converted herself into a delicious, bloody corpse on those spikes. The wistful, hungry gazes continued, as the rodents were too weak from hunger to attempt to attack her or get through the chainmail or shield that protected her body from the spikes.

The spikes rose in another blind, forceful jerk. Another batch of idiot roaches died. The bridges between the squares lifted with the spikes. Clearly if anyone had been standing there, they would've been thrown back on one of the deadly squares. The ruthless protrusions stayed up for awhile, then sunk into the ground.

A small sobbing noise rent the air.

If Alicia looked to her back, she might notice a mother rat gently licking her brood. She had no milk for her babies due to the extreme starvation the little creatures lived in. The other rats looked hungrily to them for awhile, but the mother rat hissed with all of her fatigued might.

It was too wearisome to fight a living thing. The rats returned to staring, longing in their eyes, at the female knight.

The trenches were a grid, and thus contiguous. The entire room could be traversed without leaving a trench. The glyph is in the middle of a square on the far end of the room, however, at the opposite side that the entrance was on, but at the same level.

The Dark Tower
Sure enough, the machinery roared again and the spikes flew up from the floor with unimaginable speeds. Seeing this happen without all of the spikes in her face made the Knight wonder all over again how on earth she had survived an untimely death at the sharp tips of the steel spears; but she wasn't about to ask any questions when it came to said survival- especially considering she had lived through much worse.

Upon seeing the mother rat and it's brood, Alicia frowned slightly, not wanting to let the poor beasts die of starvation, but also not really having much of a choice in the matter. After a brief moment's thought, quickly reached into the small sack she had been carrying with her and tossed the majority of the food to the far corner of the trench. If the rats moved out of the way as she anticipated them to (seeing as they ate their friend Alicia had shot seconds before), she would scoop up the mother rat and her children into the sack, which had a small amount of food left inside still. She wasn't sure what she would do with the creature were she to save it- but she also wasn't going to leave a mother and her newborn babies to eventually be eaten by the stronger, still alive males of the group once they were too weak to fight back. Failing at that, Alicia would simply leave the rest of her food with the mother and her children, hoping the best for the small creatures

After that, Alicia began to make her way toward the glyph, traveling at a snail's pace to check for traps, monsters- the whole shebang- rather than being punched in the gut by a hundred ten-foot tall spikes for the second time in the last few minutes.

The rats watched the food fly into the other corner and quickly and quietly moved towards it like so many red-eyed shadows. They ate with incredible haste.

The mother rat looked as though she planned to turn and run after the food like the others until the kind knight saw fit to lift her and her children out of the black hell that the unfortunate little animals lived in. The rat seemed grateful, in a ratty sort of way, chittering thankfully as she ate her fill of food. When she was full, the little creature curled up around the seven infant rats of hers and went to sleep, feeling safe for the first time in her rodent life.

Alicia would find no obstacles in the trench other than the dry bones that smelled strongly of 20 years' worth of evaporated rat urine and the darkness that she alleviated with her shield. The tower vermin had left the knight alone after her tribute of the food, and now politely went about their business.

Strangely, if she tarried long enough in the room, the spikes would begin to slow down. Over several minutes, the spikes gained more and more time before they sssnked up through the ground until there were sixty second intervals between each rising. The machinery's noise, however, became louder and more ominous, as though the room had somehow realized that Alicia was avoiding the spikes and was plotting some fresh torture.

If the knightess got close enough to the glyph to touch it, she might notice a small phrase engraved beneath it:

The Dark Tower
A sense of foreboding was one of the last things Alicia wanted to feel in a dungeon that immediately attacked anyone that walked into it with ten foot tall steel spikes that could easily impale the average human. Foreboding combined with the ever-present hum of machinery turning into a cacophonous roar was even worse, as was the fact that the spikes were coming out of the ground at slower intervals. The Knight wasn't about to stick around to find out what exactly was going on- but she couldn't exactly immediately leave either.

Not with the riddle in front of her.

Now, Alicia and riddles didn't exactly get along. With the rhyming and the hidden meanings- the Knight simply did not understand the point to the blasted things. She herself was far too straightforward to make up such things- and thinking about them in any other light aside from what the words actually meant (which mostly sounded kind of ridiculous to her) was simply impossible for the girl.

After staring at the glyph for a moment and attempting to come up with some sort of answer to the limerick, Alicia sighed and simply struck the glyph with a gloved fist. It seemed straightforward enough to her- but she still didn't catch the significance of the riddle. It seemed easier to her to simply beat the glyph into submission rather than attempting to open it by answering the riddle- though she was relatively sure that that particular maneuver was highly frowned upon in the adventuring world.

Regardless, Alicia's hand connected with the glyph and she waited to see what would happen- hoping that the door would open lest she would have to find the actual answer to the riddle.

.the second floor Good Version
The very second that Alicia touched the glyph, she would find herself transported to a place much brighter than the gloomy room. The very walls themselves seemed luminous, rather, luminosity appeared to be a property of the atmosphere in the room itself. There were no shadows on the ground, as the light came from every angle and every drop of "paint" on the wall.

There were a number of things apparent in the room.
The first was a red glyph on the far end of the room at hand level and a door next to it. The door was locked, but there was an inscription under the door that said, "Ready!"
The second was a large, wooden stand.
The third was the woman behind the stand who looked genuinely surprised to see the young knight standing there. Her clothes showed a coastal influence, and she held a bowl in her hand.

"Oh! You like... passed the test?" she asked, her eyes wide before she began hastily throwing lemons and bits of sugarcane into her bowl and grinding it with a pestle. "Like... nobody ever comes up here. They always get stuck on like... the first floor."
The young woman finished expertly grinding the lemons and cane into a fine paste. She reached under the cabinet and poured some ice and water into the bowl. She stood back up and mixed the water with the paste until it was completely dissolved. Finally, she held the bowl out towards the knight. "Lemonade?"

The Dark Tower
The shocking brightness of the room caused the Knight to cover her eyes for a moment, wincing slightly at the sudden influx of light. While she had had some light from her magical shield, it had only dimly lit the dark, spike-filled floor below. After a bit of blinking and eye-rubbing, the Knight was finally able to glace about the oddly lit room roughly around the same time the girl started talking.

Alicia had seen some strange things in her life- but finding a random woman in the second floor of a tower that was just seconds ago trying to kill the Knight was more than a bit unexpected. The fact that she was going out of her way to prepare Lemonade for the Knight was even more disconcerting to Alicia- who was relatively certain by now that the glyph she had touched had simply driven her mad and that any instant now the steel spikes would burst from the ground and end her life... or so she hoped would happen so she wouldn't have to listen to the woman talk anymore.

That being said, without having to ask or say anything to the girl, she already revealed to Alicia that she was the first of many to have reached even this point in the tower- a fact that seemed to surprise Alicia just as much as the girl. As the lemonade was offered to her, Alicia raised an eyebrow, not wanting to accept the liquid immediately from the woman- seeing as this place had been trying to kill her moments before. "Eh... apologies if I'm being rude..." she began, glancing around the room as she did so, "But would you mind taking a sip first? I'm just a bit worried that this place is still trying to make quick work of me-"

"And what is this place anyway? I just kind of... walked in after an old man told me not to. Thought it was some sort of demon's den- though I'm beginning to think I was mistaken."

.the second floor Good Version
The ditzy-looking lemonade girl smiled, almost embarrassed when Alicia asked her to sample her own beverage.

"I'm so sorry! I bet you're thinking like... totally gross, amirite? Like, eww. How long have these lemons been like, sitting here. I get it."
Without the slightest bit of hesitancy, the woman lifted the bowl to her lips and took a dainty gulp. "Aaaah. That's like, totally good."

She set the bowl down with a loud clack. A small, pudgy, purple octopus crawled up on the counter. Unlike a normal octopus, it had a rather humanoid face, sans a nose, on its head, the tentacles being more like legs. It licked its purple mouth and narrowed its eyes at the lemonade. Apparently the octopus liked lemonade.

The young woman ducked under the counter and began placing more supplies on the stand: a bowl, another pestle, another bunch of lemons, some more sugar cane, a pitcher of ice water. "Do you want me to like... make you another one?" Her voice was audible from behind the wood counter. "I know it's like, totally gross to drink after other people, but like, you adventurers or whatever are always fine with that when you like, come through here."

The octopus dipped a tentacle into the bowl and brought it to its mouth, tasting the beverage and closing its eyes in happiness, savoring the flavor.

The lemonade stand tender figured out the pet's shenanigans. "Ewww! Stop that. Bad! Bad! I'm totally sorry!"

The Dark Tower
Cocking an eyebrow at the odd woman, Alicia decided it would be best to simply accept the lemonade from the girl and drink it. She was clearly suffering from some sort of mental disease from being alone with this octopus for so long- judging from the sheer amount of times she used the term "like"- and Alicia wasn't about to be on anyone who had a mental disorder's bad side. Especially if said person was offering her a beverage called "lemonade". It seemed delicious enough, and the girl, while incredibly weird, seemed to be genuine enough. Any chances of poison were rather slim, though she was still a bit worried that in showing a little good will and accepting the beverage she may be making a rather sizable and deadly mistake.

On top of all of this, the little octopus thing was creeping her right the fuck out. She had never seen such a creature before- and it's unsettlingly human features were a bit more than Alicia would ever want in a pet of any sort. She cringed slightly when it dipped it's tentacle into the beverage, and once again once the woman started shouting at the cephalopod. "It's... It's quite all right. Don't worry about it. Unless your pet is venomous- I've had much much worse happen to things I was about to drink. I would gladly partake in some of this 'Lemon-Aid'."

"Anyway... you didn't answer my question: What is this tower even? Or do you not know?"

"Right, duh." The woman popped herself lightly on the head for forgetting Alicia's question. "I like... don't get to talk much so excuse me if I'm like... bad at it. So! Let me introduce myself." The "self" was drawn out musically and she put her hand to her chest in a manner that might have come off cute were it not for the eldritch circumstances from which she spoke. "I don't have like... a given name. Actually, all of this..." she waved a hand about to indicate the entire room, and by extension the tower. "...is me. I am the tower." Her tone was grave for a mere second before she leaned on the counter and began twirling her hair, her ditzy manner returning. "But you can call me Torra! So like, I have many aspects, but I showed you this one because you're super nice and we can be BFFs!"
The woman grinned goofily, reassuringly at the lady knight and casually began grounding up some lemonade for her pet. "You probably should've talked to my dad outside. He might've given you some pointers. I think he was really rooting for you."

Several whiskers peeked over the edge of the food sack, and the mother rat from the floor previous peeked up, intrigued by the sweet smells on the air.

The woman squealed, though it wasn't from fright at the rat as much as it was from excitement. "Miska!" came the high-pitched cry. "You brought her out? How awesome! I mean, like... I haven't seen her since she was human. Anyways, this is like... a big test!" She finished the lemonade and set it in front of her pet, who accidentally fell into the bowl. "There's this like... strong sword at the top, right? It's my job to make sure nobody lame gets it. You already showed compassion by saving that lady, there. We're just going to check for some other qualities."

She ducked beneath the counter again, getting yet another set of lemonade supplies from just beneath the counter. The pause was long enough for questions.

Trivia: Torra comes from Old English "torr" (tower).

The Dark Tower
There were several questions spinning in Alicia's head as the girl explained a rather sizable list of things the Knight hadn't been expecting to hear from the technical "master" of the tower when she had first entered the dark place. It had certainly appeared to be a den of demons before Alicia had entered- and it was rather difficult to believe that Torra was actually the tower- but there was no point in protesting that- since it was very clearly the truth.

However, at the mere mention of the artifact at the top of the tower, the Knight's eyes lit up and she leaned forward, a small grin alighting on her features.

"A sword?" she started, immediately much more interested in the conversation she was having. Alicia had been searching for a new blade for some time now- after her previous blade, Nyla, had been fused to the arm of the dragon she had fought alongside Iskra, Jack and Lethe. Anything that was protected by a massive trial such as the tower she was currently in would certainly be a prize if she could win it.

The only issue was, Alicia worried that she may not be able to pass such trials. She was certainly quite proud of her strengths, but had she not coincidentally activated her magical barrier to light up the room, Alicia would have surely been impaled on the spikes below. If the other trials were even more deadly, she would have to be much more careful than she had been being. "What kind of sword?"

Accepting her bowl of lemonade as she leaned forward, the Knight cleared her throat and took a sip, wincing at the tartness and sweetness of the drink. With a slight cough, she started to put the bowl down, but rather than seeming like an ungrateful guest to the controller of her fate, she thought better of it and brought the dish back to her. Alicia was almost giddy with excitement (and the sugar probably wasn't helping) at the prospect of having a new sword once again. She had felt bare without Nyla by her side- and, with any measure of luck, she would have a fine blade by dusk.

Provided she wasn't brutally murdered in the trials before.

"What kind of sword?"

The lemonade lady seemed to be a bit confused by the question. "Like... how many types of swords are there? I don't get out much, so I can't really tell you anything other than that it's a sword. My dad put it up here. He said that it was a special one, so like... I guess that's your answer!"
Her voice was unusually cheery for one who was willing to kill someone over an item that she didn't know the details over.

"It's not like you can turn back now or anything. Cool metaphor, huh? Like... people go looking for power and they're like... drawn to it and stuff. But when they start chasing it, BAM!" She clapped her hands together. "They suddenly can't stop. Like weed. Oh, and there's a bunch of gold and stuff around the sword too. I'm sure it's worth a lot in a trade."

Trivia: Torra comes from Old English "torr" (tower).

The Dark Tower
The Knight gave out a defeated sigh as the girl explained what little she knew about the weapon. If nothing else- it would be a piece of excellent craftsmanship- though the Knight dreamed of bearing a famed sword to smite her foes with. Furrowing her brow- Alicia gave a concerned look to the Torra. Perhaps her years of isolation had driven her insane? Regardless, the Knight figured it would be a good idea to correct the spirit, "Actually... I came here thinking it was a demon's den. Didn't realize there was any sort of power in here at all." She was a bit wary about taking the "gold and stuff" around the sword as well- as she still didn't trust that such promises of riches wasn't another sort of test to see how greedy the Knight was. That being said... she could use a few more bartering items- seeing as she had dropped all of her previous stock purchasing the bow and armor she now carried on her person.

Sipping at her lemonade more regularly now, having gotten used to the tanginess of the beverage, she decided another question was in order for the Tower. "So- you were made specifically to guard the sword then- right? What happens to you once the sword is gone? Do you just... vanish- Or what?" She tapped her head and looked up, as if she were thinking about something, "Never really did understand the finer points of magic."

The lady was clearly confused as to why the knight would be seeking out demons. This was evidenced by the strange look she gave the knight and the comment, "Well, some demons can be hot, yea. They bring a lot of drama, though and like... never want to commit."

She twirled a tendril of blonde hair around her fingers. "Like... I'm really not sure. I was just a little kid when my dad like... turned me into a tower. I don't really mind, I've like... got lots of company. I guess I'll like... do what everybody else does when someone like... finishes all of the challenges. Otherwise I guess we'll like... be here forever."

The thought didn't seem to sadden her any.

The Dark Tower
Nodding, Alicia finished her bowl of lemonade and set it back on the table, quite satisfied by the tart beverage. "Well- I guess I only have one more question then..."

Reaching down to the sack hanging from her belt, the Knight untied the rope that kept it tied to her and gently brought it up to the table, holding the lip of said sack open so the rats inside could crawl out if they so desired. "You mentioned that this rat- Miska- was once a person... who was she? Or rather, who is she? And are all of her children people too, or are they rats? Or some sort of hybrid race?"

"And-" she continued, watching the small animals as they peeked out of the bag she had been keeping them in, "aside from that- I suppose I should ask what each floor has in store for me, so I don't die terribly via impalement like I almost did on the last floor."

"Oh- and I should probably leave Miska and her children here, so they're not in anymore danger. I would feel pretty bad if I had saved them from the floor below only to get them killed higher up..."

Torra smiled and benevolently received the bag of rats from the kind knight. "I'm sure they'll thank you if you like... make it through."
The lady set the bag next to a bowl of lemonade. The female rat, having drank nothing but unpleasant things to survive thus far, happily accepted the sugary beverage. "Miska was like... one of the first group of people to come here. It was like... her and her two boyfriends I guess? And it was one other guy too. She like... like... I barely remember but it was like... she was half demon and she wanted the sword to like... take over a bunch of villages with and like... make everyone her slaves and have like... all the guys oppressed and stuff and serving her. It was pretty messed up. They were talking about it all loud, and I guess her boyfriends got tired of it because they saw the big rats we had and fed her to them back when we had like... big ones and while the rats were distracted they like... started fighting each other on the first floor and trying to like... get to the exit first. I was like 'whatever, losers' and killed them with spikes. After they died they like... lost their normal bodies and I like... turned their souls into little rats that had to hide from the spikes and the bigger rats. They like... couldn't die either. Every time they did they just like... came back as a different rat. I guess I felt bad because like... anytime someone was mean to them and didn't try to help I like... turned them into a new rat instead of letting them on this second floor. Eventually there were like... enough rats to kill the bigger ones I originally had down there. It isn't all like, gloom and doom and stuff. They get to like... live forever as rats. Like, if they die, then they just get to be born as a new one or they like... form. And Miska even got to start a family. You should see how many kids she's had while she was down there. I've lost count. Every few years she like... dies of a tumor, though. Rats don't live very long, but she like... gets to come back every time. And she's ruling down there too, I guess, since she's like... the only girl rat. The guys all love her a lot. Like, you should see the party they have whenever they have like... energy and aren't all just lying around. Sometimes I go talk to them. It gets lonely here so I like... keep everyone who's failed here with me one way or another. Besides, I couldn't like... let them go out and spoil all the answers."

She smiled, petting the little rat softly, who still drank away, as though she wasn't sure when she would find a clean beverage again. "I like for new people to come through. Some of the ones who have been here longer have like... forgotten how to talk and stuff like that. It's a real bummer when they forget what it was like to be like... human."

There was a pause. Miska looked up in fear. "Anyways, you like... wanted to know the floor structure? You'll see like... the third floor, the fifth floor, the seventh floor, and the ninth floor after this, right? And like... each one of those rooms is going to like... have some things in it." She began running her finger along the air in front of the lemonade stand and it left marks on the air as though the space was a dry-erase board. "You'll probably see some people who have like... failed the room. There aren't going to be as many people on these floors as like... the floors previous. Most people like... failed at the start. Anyways, you'll see them..." A squiggle. "You'll see some markings on the far wall, they're usually like... glowy. If they aren't glowy, then there's like... a problem. The red mark on the first floor was like... okay, but if you see any red marks after this you'd like... better not touch them. If the marks are like... green or blue or some color like that, then things are all right. Anyways, if you like... don't want to free anyone or figure out how to help, there's like... an emergency exit on the far end. You really shouldn't take the emergency exit, but if you open the door you'll see like... a stairway leading to the next level. Usually you'll see like... a clue in each room." More squiggles. "But you don't really have to like... free anyone if you don't want to. It's just kind of a nice thing to do."

Suddenly, the glyph on the far-end of the room turned green. "Green glyphs are always safe to touch. Do you like... have any more questions?"

The Dark Tower
"No... I don't think so."

The Knight bowed to the strange woman, and began to make her way to the glyph at the far end of the room. The prospect of failure was tremendous- but she had sealed her fate already by entering the tower, a fact that she would have liked to know before barging in here. Next time there was a mysterious old man sitting outside a dungeon, she'd be sure to grill the guy for questions so she wasn't in the pickle she was now. It would be a bit less disconcerting if she could actually leave the place as well- but Torra had made it all too clear that she could only go farther into the place from here. And the sword after all of the trials was more than reward enough to make the possibility of failure be less terrifying- not to mention making it through the tower would prove her mettle as both a Knight and (hopefully) a bastion of all things good and just.

She checked her quiver- making sure she still had plenty of arrows and that it was still securely in place before tentatively reaching out toward the glowing green mark on the wall before her. With her fingers inches away from the glyph, Alicia turned back to Torra and grinned slightly.

"See you on the next floor," she said- reaching out and touching the glyph with her outstretched hand.

.the third floor
Hardly had Alicia turned and said goodbye before she would find herself in the darkness again.

This room was different from the first in that the darkness was not complete. A glyph on the far end of the room threw light. The lit glyph was adjacent a door. The door had a goat-skull and worm motif. That door had an unlit glyph above it, and another unlit glyph on the side of the door opposite the lit glyph.
The lit glyph connected to a line that cast a bright red light on the room, and was lit for about a third of its length. Interrupting the apparent flow of energy was a statue (not attached to the wall) with an unlit glyph on the ground before it. There were two other such statues in the room. All three of them looked like men in full armor wielding hammers.

These things were on the periphery of the room on the outer circle formed by the icy, stone walls.

On the inside of the room, there was a vast contraption shaped like a large cylinder. Specifically, there were three gears embedded in the ground. They weren't turning, as atop them were piles of boulders sturdily held in place by cement. It was one large wall, segmented into three wall segments. The gears seemed to be making some effort to turn, as they emitted a quiet, mechanical noise, the impotency of which was the polar opposite of the free, ominous churning of the spikes on the first floor.

If Alicia took a brief walk around, she might notice a hammer not unlike the massive instruments wielded by the ominous statues.

Just over the boulders, a larger cylinder of ice was visible. Various adventurers in various states of undress, and injury were sealed inside of this column in various positions. Horror marked their stiff faces.
If she looked long enough, she would see one of them blink. One of the barely-clothed men writhed responsively within his frozen encasement, his bare skin blue and his eyes rolling around in his head, as though he wished to warn the knight of something. Most of the company, however, failed to move at all. Behind the walls, not yet visible, were three more statues of men with hammers, though these had the walls before them instead of the glyphs.

There was an inscription near the door at the far end of the room:

You break the wall down and you turn your back on the builders
The wall returns to the state it was
before you heaved the boulders
Cementing on the other side the meaning of your life
The radiator's been shut down and i've been sealed in ice

The Dark Tower
Helping the people encased in the ice was the first idea that came to the Knight's mind as she entered the room- however, it became rather apparent to her after taking in her surroundings that she had best figure out how to get the door open first. That being said- she had absolutely no idea where to start with such a task. Alicia had never had to deal with riddles and puzzles and- as stated before- she was not much for solving such things, preferring a much more head-on approach herself.

Thus- the only thing she could think of doing first was picking up the oversized hammer in front of the door. She approached the weapon cautiously, her eyes constantly darting about the room to check for any changes in terms of the statues, the gears, the goat-head motif and the glyphs. The last thing she needed was to be caught unawares by another trap like she had been on the first floor. Once Alicia reached the hammer, she hefted it onto her shoulder and glanced around the room once again, before approaching one of the nearby statues.

The fully-armored, club-wielding men didn't exactly strike the Knight as one of the more comforting things in life. On top of the feeling of unease the statues gave her- she constantly felt like she was being watched by the man imprisoned in the block of ice. She figured it would be a good idea to once again activate her shield, since she had absolutely no idea how to wield the large mallet she was carrying and since she was still convinced that something was going to happen that would result in much injury on her part. After chanting the required spell and being covered in a protective barrier, she relaxed slightly- knowing that she would not be killed on the spot, unless the floor opened up into a pit of acid or something.

Upon realizing it would be rather hard to attempt to move a large stone statue whilst carrying the hammer she had picked up- Alicia placed said weapon on the ground headfirst- attempting to keep the hilt of the over-sized club positioned in the air so she could quickly grab it if need be. With a great heave- she rushed into the side of the statue, putting the bulk of her weight into moving the huge thing in hopes that it would reveal more as to what she needed to do next.

The statue is apparently light (100 lbs.) and hollow on the inside, not nearly as heavy as its ominous appearance would indicate. It moves easily when Alicia pushes it, falling over on its side.

However, upon hitting the ground with a crack and a crunch, it would emit another noise, a shout of pain followed by a sound not unlike a whimper of fear. It didn't sound like it came from a large and intimidating warrior. In fact, the noise sounded like one that might issue forth from the throat of a very small, very intimidated little man.

There is nothing interesting under the statue. Everything else in the room remains the same.

The Dark Tower
Whimpering was one of the last things Alicia had expected upon seeing the statue shatter. Hell- she hadn't been expecting the statue to shatter at all. Perhaps it would be a better idea to simply try something else in the room- seeing as the glyph hadn't lit up on the floor or anything. She was beginning to think she had made a mistake in attempting to move the statue, seeing as nothing had happened aside from the wail of pain and the sound of someone sobbing in fear and pain.

Hopefully she hadn't caused anyone any undue harm or awoken some sort of terrible spirit. Because that would be rather bad.

Lifting the hammer again- Alicia approached the mess of boulders and gears from the north side- angling her body so she could keep an eye on the door, lest something come out of it/something bad happen. With a loud grunt, she hefted the hammer into the air and sent it sailing toward one of the boulders with as much strength as she could muster. She could only hope that shattering the boulder would cause something productive to happen, and that it wouldn't let out a cry of agony and start whimpering as well- because she wouldn't be entirely sure what to do next should that happen.

The wall before Alicia tumbles down easily, much as the statue had been easily ruined.

The straining sound of the machine is reduced as the gear rumbles to life, turning easily.

Behind the wall, a statue of a frozen, starving man with a hammer stands, looking at her miserably. The statue is very, very lifelike and detailed, its white body standing delicately atop the stands with chains and shackles around its arms and wrists. It's sort of like a morbid version of one of those old, naked greek statues. The bones of the depicted man are clearly visible and easy to follow, as his skin is drawn tight by hunger. Apparently, the person shown in the artwork is still capable of holding the hammer quite well, though he clutches it as one might clutch a precipice for dear life.

The gear churns happily along between her and the half-dead man.

Having to swing at the wall would make her turn from the shattered statue behind her for a brief moment. If she looked at the ruined statue again, she'd find it was restored to exactly how it was when she walked into the room.

The Dark Tower
Hammer man was creeping the ever-loving hell out of Alicia once she had successfully destroyed the wall of boulders. The statue had seemed so real- so life-like that she had almost dropped the hammer she had been using upon laying eyes on the thing. She didn't want to take her eyes off of the thing- not without knowing for sure it wouldn't move forward and smash her face in with it's huge mallet.

Setting the hammer that she had been wielding back onto the ground (handle pointing upward), Alicia drew her bow and one of the blunt-tipped arrows that she usually carried on her person and drew her bow- restringing and readying it in one fluid motion. After a moment of hesitation, Alicia aimed the fowling arrow at the statue's arm; after all, she only wanted to see if the thing would react to being shot at before deciding whether or not she should smash the damned thing. Aside from that even, the statue could have easily been another soul of someone who had failed the tower previously- and she didn't want to cause any undue harm to them either, not when they were doomed to an eternity of reincarnation and death within the Tower; although she was pretty sure that the men frozen inside the block of ice beyond the barrier were said souls rather than the statue before her- because if she had learned anything from visiting Torra- it was that looks could be deceiving.

At any rate- she let the blunt missile fly, striking the hammer-man-statue's right arm.

The arrow flew with a great deal of force due to its close range. It took off a great piece of the statue's arm, and a sound like an old man crying out rang through the chambers. The arm didn't fall off immediately, but it eventually cracked under its own weight and that of the hammer. The arm fell to the floor, crumbling. The hammer tumbled forwards into the gear, which mechanically ground it up into a fine powder and continued its mindless churnings.

All the while a voice cried out from the statue, though nothing about the stone's facial expression or pose changed, since it was a statue and all. "Please... please don't... It hurts it hurt it hurts it hurts..."

The arm of the statue bled profusely, defying all logic. "It hurts... help... help me! Make it stop! Why can't I die? I just want... it HURTS!"

The Dark Tower
It was painfully evident that Alicia had made quite the mistake. By the time the screaming had begun and the blood had started pouring, the Knight was already going through the necessary incantation and hand motions to heal the bleeding stump where the man's arm had been. A soft, white light began to glow and form into a ball within her hands- which she then pushed toward the screaming statue. Hopefully it would be enough to heal his wounds and stop the pain- but Alicia did not have the power to regenerate lost limbs and the like. Not yet anyway.

"Fates above- I'm so sorry, sir," she began as the healing light went about it's work, "I thought you were going to come to life and attempt to smash my head in with that hammer you were holding. Clearly, I was mistaken. I, ah... I don't suppose you could tell me what exactly it is that I need to do in this room, so I don't accidentally severely wound someone else? If not- I completely understand. Wouldn't want to chat with someone who blew off my arm either..."

It was rather obvious that the Knight was terribly out of her element, as she was not used to harming people who didn't readily deserve it from her. Hopefully she didn't find out that she had miserably failed the test on this floor... though she still hadn't completed hammering the walls down and starting the contraption within the floor.

Slowly. Slowly the statue's blood loss ceased until the root of the arm became a solid, nonbleeding nub. The cries, likewise, were muted.

"It hurts..." he continued to protest up until the healing spell was complete. "It... I feel..."
The voice from the statue took on more sane overtones. "I feel... nice... I feel... a touch. A woman?"

He fell silent for a moment. "A woman's touch. I just want... one more night... woman? A woman. Please, woman, have mercy..."

A sigh seemed to come from everywhere and nowhere. "They like... never learn. Perverts."

The man didn't stop begging when the sigh interrupted him. He simply continued talking, asking with so many flowery words for various kinds of acts. His voice joined the background noise provided by the turning gear. "It's been so long, I can barely remember... just one night, blessed woman. I swear not to tell anyone. It will be our wonderful secret. Our wonderful, wonderful secret. Please... I know that's why you did this to me. I'm very sorry, I should have asked more kindly. Just don't leave me in this hell... I can only feel, but you have given me nothing to feel. Is not this punishment greater than the crime? I swear it, I have learned my lesson. I'll even taste your lemonade when you give me back my taste. Is that not all you wanted? I'm begging you... You must be so lonely in this tower. Don't tell me it isn't true. Touch me again. Please..."

The Dark Tower
"Uh..." Alicia took a step backward as the man started begging to have "one night" with the Knight. Alicia tried to be as nice and helpful as possible, but she would never go so far as to give her body to another for absolutely no reason. Aside from that even- Alicia had never... consummated her affections for another person- and she wasn't about to do so with the gaunt, armless and immobile statue that she had just met.

Instead of listening to the man's gibberings, the Knight hefted the hammer she had dropped and continued around to the next section of wall- all the while ignoring the words that spilled from the statued man's mouth(?). She hoped that hammering away at the next section of wall would cause the thing to cease with it's ramblings, but she was relatively sure that it would simply continue on and on until she either left the room or Torra got tired enough of the man that she somehow magically muted his voice. Hopefully the next statue (as, if nothing else this room seemed to be full of symmetry- so it was only logical to assume there would be two more) would be less ready to "grab some tail" (as she had heard some bandits refer to it once) and more ready to help her out of this goddamned puzzle.

The statue continued speaking.

There was another statue behind the next wall. This one was a fat and repugnant man with a hammer. He wore an open bathrobe and nothing else, really. In a way, this statue was more offensive than the last, and he had a possessive, predatory gaze permanently sealed on his face. The stone smirked lecherously forwards, forever.

With the second wall down, the second gear began to turn, even further lessening the sound of the machinery straining. It was beginning to chug along quite successfully. Only one more gear remained.

The Dark Tower
The fat one was infinitely worse than the talkative one. Alicia was half tempted to smash in the head of the second statue, regardless of the amount of blood and screaming it would cause. She had seen men that looked like this one- hell, she had killed many more of them. Men who lived for the pleasures of life so much that they went out of their way to kidnap young girls and rape them to their heart's content- all while stuffing their faces with varying amounts of fatty, sweet foods. Men who would fornicate with a corpse rather than have to go a day without sticking their genitals in something. Men who would kill something if it didn't give them any pleasure. Some people called them bandits, some people called them bogeymen. Regardless, there was a rather sizable reason as to why Alicia didn't go out of her way to not behead such men, and while it pleased her to rid the world of such beings- it was more of a comfort in knowing that they no longer hurt and threaten others than anything else that made it so easy for her to end them.

That being said, this one was a statue. Hopefully he would remain that way.

Going on to the last section of boulders, Alicia hefted the hammer once more, muttering to herself, "Well... here goes nothing...." before sending the mallet flying at the rocks once more.

The statue of the repugnant man made no noise. If it had a soul like the talkative one, that soul had no way of sensing that she was there.

The final wall came down to reveal a fairly ordinary looking man. He wasn't creepily gaunt as the older man's statue, nor was he bloated like the statue of the twenty-something year-old hedonist. No, this was a middle aged man, one who looked somewhat disturbed by his circumstances, but was not the type of person one would attribute evil to. His muscular frame was the one who worked hard to get where he'd been in life, and he wore scant bits of chainmail, though most of it had ostensibly been torn off by the beast that had stripped the others. Also of note were his pointy, feline ears and his long, equally feline tail.

He looked plainly ahead at the destruction of his wall, and the final gear began churning.

"Why hello there."
The statue's mouth moved, and it became apparent that this was more than just a statue. The tail began to twitch inquisitively, and the man smiled. His voice sounded trustworthy. Color returned gradually to his body starting at the top of his ears and traveling down to his chest. The tip of his tail as well had a bit of color on it that animated the entire limb, though this effect ended at the base of the appendage. His humanoid legs and his armored paws remained stiffly in the stone.

The circle of the tormented bodies began rotating as the machinery became animated.
Likewise, many of the souls who were aware of what was going on tried their hardest to scream, though the ice stuffing their lungs and throat prevented any noise from coming forth.
Familiar spikes extended down from above, shattering the ice on the ceiling and sending it down in great chunks. The entire room shook with a force that would probably knock the young knight off of her feet.

Much as the cylinder in the middle of the room was rotating clockwise, the ceiling was rotating counterclockwise and steadily descending, the spikes thrusting in and out, in and out, chugging, chugging in rhythm with the moving gears, much faster than the spikes on the first floor. They'd begun grinding the top of the ice prison into a fine frost powder, and if they continued to descend, they would soon consume everything in the room.

The living statue looked up. "Oh dear, not this again..."

The Dark Tower
Alicia was more than a bit glad that the last statue ended up being relatively normal. No matter how sane he sounded though, the Knight was relatively sure he, like the other two statues she had seen, wasn't exactly the most savory of individuals. However, he was at least somewhat civilized, and therefore hopefully able to hold a conversation that didn't revolve around begging her for one last night with a woman.

And that was when the spikes decided to sprout from the ceiling and begin their descent toward Alicia.

"What is it with you and spikes, Torra!?"

As the strange cat-man muttered about this having happened before, Alicia looked at him- keeping an eye on the spikes as they crept down from the ceiling. "A hint as to how to stop this would be nice, stranger!"

Recalling the poem from before, Alicia reiterated the entirety of it in her head before nodding to herself and spinning on her heel- still listening as to what the cat-man had to say as she did so. If she understood the poem correctly, turning her back on the statues she had just uncovered would recreate the stone wall that she had destroyed to start the gears. Hopefully that would work- because she had absolutely no idea what she could possibly do next beyond simply attempting to escape the room- leaving the puzzle unfinished.

When the knight turned, all of the noise suddenly stopped.

True to the lyrical prose, the wall had returned to the state it was before she moved the boulders, which were now cemented back into place...

...save one. The hammerless statue's wall remained down and the gear remained cheerily turning. He continued to cry on. "Something's shaking. Is she coming?"
Surprisingly, the gaunt one became quiet, deciding that he'd either died and fallen into oblivion, or the woman who touched him must have died and left.

The ceiling had retreated back into place as well, as though time had rewound itself.

"Hello! Hello, mi'lady?" the man with obvious oni heritage cried out. "Are you still there? Could you maybe break this wall down again so we can talk properly?"

The Dark Tower
Breathing a sigh of relief as the ceiling stopped dropping (as well as an additional one when the gibbering man stopped talking), Alicia dropped to the ground for a moment, thankful that she had been correct about the riddle.

"Well..." she breathed, blowing an errant strand of hair out of her eyes, "Clearly that was the wrong thing to do right away."

Upon hearing the cat-man speak again, the Knight pushed herself up off the ground and reached for the hammer once again. Upon clearing the boulders in front of the half-breed- she released the hammer- dropping it once again with the hilt pointing upward in case she had to quickly reach for it to use. "Apologies about that. Hopefully next time I activate a death trap I activate it after I've finished the puzzle at hand..." She nodded slightly to the man, a look of exasperation on her features. "They call me Alicia. Former Knight of Dorn and current no-one-worth-mentioning.

Glancing upward at the ceiling- but being sure to keep the statue in her periphery, the Knight frowned and sighed once again before returning her gaze to the half-blood, "Perhaps you can help me not die a terrible spike-filled death?"

The man breathed a sigh of relief as well. "You really are a sight for sore eyes, mi'lady. A lovely knight of purity. Quite unlike the usual rabble that comes through here. Well, not like I would know. I haven't really seen anyone pass this point. Of course I will be happy to assist you in any way I can. I wouldn't want--" he looked down at his body, as though to verify that it was, in fact, still stone. "--you to come out like me. Yes, I know I'm a demon and your kind don't trust demons as far as they can throw them, but I can help you with this riddle."

First of all, he took his hammer and threw it into the gears where it was ground to pieces. "You sorted out a part that I couldn't. That's jolly good. These hammers are plainly the problem. Now, the part that I almost solved was the outer ring. You see there?" He pointed a clawed finger towards the lit portion of the wall that extended from the bright glyph to Switch A. "If you touch those unlit glyphs in front of those statues, it will extend the light to the next unlit glyph. The problem lies in the fact that when you turn your back to those stones, the wall will reset. Also, turning your back on us means that the walls here will most certainly rebuild."

The Dark Tower
Scratching her chin, the Knight nodded as the strange cat-man spoke. It made sense that the hammers would actually be the problem, but destroying it would mean that she could not save any of the people encased in the block of ice- much less the statues of the men around said block of ice. She frowned slightly at this prospect, angry that she could not help those who needed it. While it was clear to her that some of these men had been imprisoned here justly- men who had come here out of greed and lust for power; there were others who clearly did not deserve the fate that had befallen them.

"All right... thanks. Glad to see that someone is still sane in this place." She bowed once again to the Oni, dropping to one knee- her features still twisted into a frown. "Is there any way I can help you and the others out of this place? I would have never thought of that on my own... so I owe you some measure of debt." Alicia stood again, looking at the man, "At least let me know your name, even if I can't help you out of this mess?"

"My name, fair lady?" the man blinked, his striped tail waving back and forth as an inquisitive expression came over his face. "Well, you may call me Paguma. I think that's my name, anyhow."

"I've had a lot of time to think over this puzzle, and I think that the key is restarting the machinery somehow, but not in the wrong order. Look, the last part goes 'the radiator's been shut down, and I've been sealed in ice'. A 'radiator'... well, it was an old word I came across in my studies, but it's a hypothetical device that gets hot in a piece of machinery. They had one somewhat operational in Medius somewhere, some relic hunters had found one, but they couldn't imagine what it was for. They're trying different things... if you fill one full of heat magic, you can cook food and melt things on it, but that's a lot less efficient than a fire."

"Anyways, I think that those lit glyphs are a manifestation of magical power on the outer wall. If you can somehow get the power to complete the circuit, I bet the radiator will turn back on and free the people. It's just a theory anyhow. I haven't seen anyone try it, and well... I might have beat it if I hadn't slipped up. You don't want to hear of what I did, mi'lady. You have a long ways to go."

The Dark Tower
With another short bow, Alicia backed away from the man- a new determination lighting up her voice as the Oni mentioned possibly being able to save the people. "Thank you, Paguma. I'll get you out of here as soon as I can. Perhaps you can tell me your story once I manage to get you out of here..."

If he's unlike most of his brethren, anyway. Hopefully his attitude reflects on his actual personage... after all, there are reasons these people are imprisoned. Can't let your guard down around Oni- Alicia.

With that unsettling thought, she turned her back on the cat-man and went toward the closest statue, giving the ornament a puzzled look. When she had knocked one over before, Alicia had heard someone cry out in pain before she turned her back on it- thus allowing it to be magically reformed. Perhaps there were more people inside of the hollow stone men? Once she was close enough to do so, the Knight reached out tentatively to the statue before closing her fist and knocking lightly on the thing's torso. If it began to fall over at all, Alicia would immediately go to set the thing back upright, not wanting to cause anymore undue pain (considering she had done so twice already).

Regardless of whether or not she had gotten a response from within the statue, Alicia would then go to the switch that had energy flowing to it already- whereupon she dropped to one knee and touched the rune with her hand..
