Moods of Blue III Empty

In complete honesty, Iskra wasn't sure how to interpret the laughter of the soldiers.

First of all, she didn't get the joke. Large phalluses were seen as a sign of femininity in her clan, due to the rather unique physiology of hyenas.

Secondly, laughter wasn't really derisive in hyenas either, and derisive laughter was a concept that she had little grasp of.

She was left to conclude that the laughing was because the soldiers were either nervous or hungry. Indeed, male hyenas often laughed when something was being withheld from them by a female.

"Lethe..." she murmured as they walked, the bear bringing up the rear and eying the soldiers with a vaguely hungry look. "Are your men hungry or something, or does my bear make them nervous?"

She heard a brief snort and a bellow from the creature behind them. It was about six or seven feet tall at the shoulder, a veritable giant among creatures. It breathed down the armored neck of the man in front of it.

"I guess if I didn't know my bear, then I'd be a little nervous too..."

The Nogatii chieftain still couldn't believe she'd mated with a bear. Besides the rather humorous logistics behind it all it was just a strange combination. A bear and a hyena? How could two beasts that were so different even hold an attraction for one another? There were vague reports of people in other lands having animals cross bred but they were usually similar species like a tiger and a lion. A bear and a hyena were about as similar as a human and a dog.

Iskra seemed puzzled at his men's attempt at humor. His mind was currently wondering how the bear felt for the woman to have the bigger genitals, but when she asked the question it snapped him back to reality. "Scared? No , not at all." He said as a matter of factly, "The Nogatii eat bear." It was a rather blunt way to put it, to be sure. No one even giving a moment's thought to the bear possibly being able to understand them.

With the exception of being some sort of pervert that was the way all of the Nogatii knew about the bear genitals. It was something you kind of came across when you were skinning and preparing the meet of one of the large creatures. "They believe that the bear is a symbol of great power. It's an old tradition for them, but eating bear meat, especially the heart, is said to give you great power and courage."

Giving a hand motion, Lethe ordered one of his men to plant another banner. "You don't know your bear either, you know. I don't think you can count an hour or two as knowing."

"Oh, so they were hungry."

This confirmed the inaccuracies in her head, and satisfied, she continued the march and would have changed the subject if it weren't for the assertion that she didn't know the bear.

"That's ridiculous," she said firmly. "How do you get to know a bear? They can't talk. They have very little preferences that normal bears don't have by default. They generally have a certain sort of personality that they share. From the way you're talking, you'd think it was a hyena or a person."

There was a rise beyond the northern border. They were going in the general direction of the Village of the Earth. This would probably be the last plot of land they could claim without a risk of infringing upon the larger village.

This plot contained a lovely little outpost. She walked as far as they could north before turning her attention to the east. "Can you smell the food?" They were still quite a distance off from the outpost, but her sense of smell was accurate. The bear roared in delight at the prospect of stopping to eat.

Lethe didn't think it was worth the effort to point out that she was the one that made the assertion to know a bear first. She'd either think he was being annoying for asking and lose respect for him, or attack him. Well, he hoped she wouldn't attack him over something like that but he still didn't feel it necessary to press.

It was then she mentioned something about food. Yes, he could smell it too. It was vaguely familiar to the smell he had taken note of before, except this was actual food with a hint of cedar. If he were a betting man he would put money down that it was the product of a cedar fire ... that is, cooking for over it. "Yes ...I do. Cedar."

His head turned in the direction of the smell, the same direction that the village he'd saw before was. "Earlier when you went out by yourself and played with bears, I encountered a similar aroma south of here. I went to investigate with my men and found an established village. I was already claimed by someone else judging by the banners it had ... there was about a five mile radius of it that I could see from my elevated position. If we keep claiming around this side it would allow us to close them in. Might be useful to do, yeah?"

"Well, whoever it is has a dog," she said sourly in response. "I walked all that distance to see where the smell of the dog ended and I had to walk maybe about..." The woman tilted her head to the side in thought. "Thirty miles? Either way, they claimed only a little bit. They simply had it arranged in a manner that made me have to walk a really big circle to get back to you. I think we can isolate them that way."

Pausing, she busily scratched another warning mark into a tree.

"I just don't want them trying to build anything right here. We want a road here to go from my place to yours, right? It should be just flat, so merchants can go back and forth. I don't need any dogs or weird things like that attacking them."

The bear bellowed, seemingly in agreement with whatever she was saying.

They soon drew upon the outpost that was producing the pleasant smells, however, and it seemed like a nice idea to go inside and have a seat.
