Ravage the Land III Empty

Iskra didn't tarry long in the strange village of the star-worshippers. It was most likely because she wasn't hungry and she wasn't unnecessarily cruel when her blood was in such a calm state and she had so many other things to do. There weren't many hours in the day, and she wanted to at least make Lethe's village by sundown so she could rest and finish claiming areas on the way back.

She marched confidently ahead of the group, and she kept her bladed chains out at her side. For now, she contented herself with carving the odd, hollow sun-symbol into the trees every once in awhile, walking in great, looping spirals to ensure that the marks would be visible to any passers-by.

For one, she wasn't yet literate. She couldn't post a sign warning others that the area belonged to her, but her instincts made her mark the land. Humans and demons both discerned things with their sight, so a visual mark would be the most universal warning. Marking it as a hyena might have only confused any humans who came about, though she knew even they could smell such a stench.

The only scent she really left was a faint one when she rubbed up against the finished mark to remove any loose wood, and the motion was rather catlike.

Lethe and his band followed closely behind Iskra. Ever since they'd left that makeshift village with the strange star in the middle of it, his men had been mumbling about a missed opportunity. Apparently they had been itching for a fight up to this point and were quite disappointed that they'd been unable to participate in one. They never directly voiced their concerns to their leader, instead keeping to themselves and mumbling about in their strange dialect of the land's native tongue.

This was one disadvantage of having taken over a group of warring tribes: their warriors were always wanting to fight. It was a source of pride and honor for them (and fun, even though they'd never directly admit it) and they were always seeking to prove their worth. Lethe found himself hoping they'd come across something worth fighting in the near future ... truth be told he wouldn't mind taking someone out either. Not in the bloodthirsty way, but in the 'bandits make good sword fodder' way.

As they walked Iskra had been etching symbols into trees. Since she was originally a hyena and a demon, such methods probably seemed effective enough for her. Lethe had a slightly more sophisticated way to mark the land, one he had made in preparation of the trip. Every half mile or so one of his archers would plant a metal "T" spike in the ground which was about five feet tall. Draping down from the top was a woven banner with the sprawling sun symbol Iskra had been etching into trees. They were colorful, using gold and indigo, and had been painstakingly created the night before by all five of his men (being tribal people of the woodlands, they had grown very good at such things).

"Any idea of places out this way?" Lethe asked Iskra as he calmly looked back to ensure that his men had put down the second spike in this one mile area .

Iskra frowned. There was something tugging in the back of her head, though she had no idea of where it was coming from. Had she been more perceptive, she would've known it to be the scent of a hound on the air.

She carved another mark into the tree as though she didn't see the banner. It wasn't out of any sort of malice or dismissive thoughts as to the effectiveness of the banners. It simply never occurred to her what the banners were for. They certainly made a bigger visual impression than the dim but deep marks that she was carving into the trees.

"I've surveyed the land along this path at times. There really is a bunch of little odds and ends around... scattered human populations... nothing dangerous as far as I know, though. Most of the hurtful spirits like to keep themselves confined to the southern forests. We can claim these lands pretty easily. Uhhh..."

She froze and furrowed her eyebrows.

Before Lethe could speak up or respond to what she was saying, the petite spotted woman disappeared into the brush. The man had literally taken his attention off of her for a few seconds, and she was gone. He couldn't help but shake his head, his thick white hair trailing the movements of his head. Lethe wasn't overly worried that she had completely disappeared on him, she had probably just found something she needed to attend to and would be back eventually.

For now he took it upon himself to finish the surveying and claiming of this land. They still had plenty of banners and would make good use of them. They went west, the opposite direction of where Iskra's voice had trailed off to, and met nothing all that interesting on the way. At one point Lethe did pause the smell the air, as he thought he could smell the familiar scent of burning cedar. Usually, the was the sign of a nearby outpost and one of good size at that.

But, he had his duties. He'd investigate later with Iskra once she returned.
