PostSubject: Combing the Beach   Thu Jun 02, 2011 8:17 pm

It was another glorious day along the shore. The sun was shining brightly, there wasn't a cloud in the sky, the breeze coming in from the water was just cool enough to keep you from overheating; all in all it was the perfect kind of day to hunt for some buried treasure. Not that buried treasure meant the same thing to the young woman as it had to the thrill seeking four year old she had once been. Back then she used to look for gems and coins, the kind of treasure from the old pirate stories he father had told her. Nowadays her idea of treasure had a little more to do with history than pirates. She wanted to find objects from the time before memory, from the world that used to be... if a world used to be at all. She wasn't sure just where she stood on the whole issue of believing, but she knew there were ruins of former buildings, buildings that were still in use, and all sorts of objects that no one could identify or place on any kind of time line. These were the thing she sought now, it was still a treasure hunt for her, the only difference being the things she now hoped to find. Since she was going farther than normal, all the way down the beach to the outcropping of weathered ruins, she chose to forgo her usual beach combing attire. The tiny swimsuit just didn't seem appropriate for this location since it was obviously not close enough to her home for the 'walk in the sand' story to work. Instead she decided to go with a simple pair of short pants and a thin linen top that had been cut along the middle of the front up to her chest so it could be tied just below her breasts. The outfit was engineered to combat the heat of the air and the exercise from digging so she didn't sweat to death out there. Her sun lightened chestnut locks had been pulled back and tied secure with a white ribbon to keep the thick hair away from her neck.

She'd only been digging for a couple hours, and coming up with nothing more than broken dishes and long rotten baskets, when she decided it was time for a break. Her mother had packed a lunch for her, like any good mother would when sending her only daughter out for a day of adventure in this heat. The young woman settled herself on an old brick wall that she believed had once been an exterior wall for a dwelling place and began to dig through the basket of food in the hopes of finding something salty to start the meal with.

My day was never normal. I worked as an operative for hire. Currently, I found myself under the employ of a noble who specialized in relic research. I wasn't quite sure what he wanted with me since my talents fell more under the clandestine nature of things, but it was a job nonetheless so I was willing to take it if it meant goods for trade. The meeting with the noble was quite normal and standard to be honest. I arrived at a tavern of his choosing but arrive thru a side "entrance". His aide is seated across from him and I appear behind him knelt and out of sight. He fights back the urge to jump as I speak sftly, "I am told you have an assignment for me, my lord." The noble tells me, tho an onlooker would think that he is speaking with his aide, that he does not wish anyone harmed or anything like that. "So what is the job?" He tells me that there is a girl who has been seen searching the beaches for relics. I don't follow. He tells me that he wants me to keep her safe and bring her to meet with him this evening to discuss how they can work together. I have heard that line before. "How we can work together"... psh! All he really wants is control over the activities and discoveries of relic hunters. Still, it is not my concern what his motives are. He is providing payment & that is enough.

So that is how I come to stand on this beach in the near distance away from the female treasure hunter. It would be bad to alarm her if I am to convince her to have this meeting. Now, I had already made a pit stop to assist with the rouse. I had retrieved a relic that true granted isn't worth all that much really but hopefully if I can get it to her then I can proceed.

Jackpot! That's what she thought as she discovered a nice hunk of cured meat and a selection of shelled and salted tree nuts beneath the sweets and various other edible items. While gazing thoughtfully over the ruins laid out around her, the girl began to chew at the dried animal flesh. She wasn't paying much attention to her surroundings, at least not as much as she should, no she was too busy imagining all the priceless relics she could possibly find in a location like this one. As far as she was currently concerned, she was all alone on this stretch of seaside real estate and assumed it would stay that way for the remainder of the daylight hours. So as she finished up the chunk of meat and moved on to the variety of nuts, the young woman was completely oblivious to any other presences in the general vicinity.

My attention falls on switching into the facade that I needed to portray... a hapless adventurer noob who is overly excited about finding... well anything that he might think is a relic. This region had many treasures from a once great and powerful nation that were cultured and militarily sound as well. So there is truly no telling what one may find around here. I start making my way towards her with much enthusiasm. Not creepy enthusiasm but the unknown object might explain my mood before my image comes into full view. The silvery strands of hair fall into place hanging down behind me. I normally like to have it stayed, but if I am a low rate adventurer, I'd have no use for such display. I would start singing, or chanting is more accurate a description, as I traverse down the sandy beach. "I found something. I found something. I found something, hey hey hey hey." I really didn't people like this but it would be among the easiest ways to keep her calm and open to conversation.

About halfway through her selection of tree nuts, the young woman heard a man's chant faintly over the sea breeze. Her first thought was that even a child could have come up with better lines but all too many of the people she'd seen stumble upon relics by sheer dumb luck had turned out to be painfully unoriginal in many aspects. Since she was facing the water and the dumb luck dude was still a good ways down the beach, she could safely roll her eyes without causing any offense to his celebration. Watching as he drew nearer to her position atop the crumbled wall, she couldn't help but smile a bit as she found herself envious of his uniquely exotic hair color. If only she'd been born with silver locks rather than the honeyed brown hue she'd grown so bored with over the years. Now she could not decide whether she was more jealous of whatever it was he may have found or the beautiful hair he had been born with. Either way she wasn't liking him very much already.

But since she had been raised to be polite, and had proper manners drilled into her head for at least the last decade, she raised a hand in greeting and called out to the lucky man once he was close enough to engage in conversation. "Congratulations on your find!" Hopefully that would be enough to convince him to stop and gloat for a while so she wouldn't have to debase herself by actually asking to see or examine the object that may or may not be a true relic.

While walking along, she engages first. Ok now that that is out of the way, I can proceed with my business. I smile at her and approach holding it up. I would stop ahead of her with happiness written all over my face. "Look what I found! Do you know what this is?" Now this question is posed for two reasons. The first is to keep her in conversation. The second and probably the more genuine reason... I myself have no clue what this thing is. So if she did know then she would be very much worth protecting and befriending after this is over. In many of my travels, I have come across mundane relics which fascinate me in a lot of respects, but are also relatively useless since I don't know what they do or how to operate them. If she does then I can bring them to her to inspect first before turning them over to my usual depositories, namely the scholarly towers in whichever region I might be working in at that time. I didn't really mind turning things over tot he Village of the Sun, but some of the others... I wasn't a fan of at all, but until I can teleport across the realm, that is my only option so that I'm not lugging unusable cargo around all the time.

Now that he took her polite offer of congratulations for the bait it truly was, Meloli hopped eagerly down from her perch along the crumbled wall and began to approach the stranger. Her eyes narrowed as she looked over the man's find from the initial distance between them. "I am still new to the whole treasure hunting thing," she lied through her perfect pearly teeth, "but from what I've learned so far objects of that shape usually fall into one of two very different categories." As she came closer, her eyes still fixed on the dull ebony surface she suspected would gleam brilliantly with a bit of tender care, the young woman studied the many curves and ripples of varying degrees and sizes that decorated the length of the shaft. "If the object is inert, meaning that it serves no other purpose beyond being a solid object, then it is most likely an ancient torture implement used to dampen or break the spirits of unruly or especially frisky women. On the other hand, if the object has a hidden mechanism within it, then it is most likely something much more mundane... though still considered quite a find for a beginner." Because the rules of treasure hunting dictate asking permission before fondling another man's booty, the vibrant young woman would try to hide some of the excitement in her honey eyes as she lifts a hand in the direction of the relic phallus. "Would you mind if I held it to search for such a mechanism?" In her many years of amateur treasure hunting and her her recent months of genuine study, Meloli had seen a few of the torture tools but so far only one of the more mundane possibilities. She was genuinely hoping to find the hidden purpose within his long, smooth shaft.

A torture tool? Now that could be useful for certain... vigorous interrogations, but looking at it, I wonder how it would work exactly. Looking it over as she speaks about mundane uses, I wonder what hidden mechanisms could be contained within it and how many have martial or covert applications. When she asks to inspect it, I cautiously hand it over and tell her that any help she can give is greatly appreciated as I am at a loss and I'm trying to prove myself useful to my current patron so that he will give me more assignments. I have always believed that the best deceptions are filled with selective or vague truths. The less u have to think up & remember the better for the deception. Having given up "the find" I patiently await her results.

Taking the stranger's object reverently into her own hands, Meloli's fingers caress the smooth dark surface with all the gentle attention a woman's fingers usually reserve for a cherished lover. Turning over within her grasp, she studies every inch, every curve, and measures the girth of the widest ripples by trying to make her index finger and thumb meet around them, when those two digits barely even come into view of one another around the most massive protruding curve, she utters a very soft, "my wonder that would have hurt". Silently praying that the shaft she is holding turns out to be the more mundane possibility, she holds it in one hand upright while her other hand strokes carefully toward the base. As her moving hand nears the bottom of the shaft it begins to turn slightly, searching for the interior mechanism that would allow her to stop imagining this device ripping women apart. The bottom curve moves just a bit with her gentle turning and her face breaks in a wide grin. Holding the object up to where the stranger can see it better, she turns the bottom curve more forcefully and watches as tiny black specks of the old spice sprinkle the ground between them. "It is the of the mundane classification believed to crush spices for garnishing foods." Beaming at the stranger, now very happy to learn no high spirited women had been broken with his tool, she offers the man his object back. "Where did you happen to find it? You probably want to return to the same location and see if there are more relics to be found. Very rarely are things like this found alone, from what I've learned, they were usually kept in the kitchens and are found with other cooking utensils."

Watching her manipulate the tool, I cannot help but wonder what she is doing. When the final result is some black grain being released, I look in mild amazement. So this was used to ground up spices. Instantly, I wonder if it could be used to grind poisonous herbs as that would make this a very skillful tool for some operatives that I know to utilize. This will also give need for me to train my body to resist such things as well.

Now while I generally prefer to add as much truth as possible to my deceptions, this would could be tricky. I did not know if this woman had explored these ruins here and if she had, had she found anything like this. Also, since I myself had not explored these ruins, it would be difficult for me to navigate properly. The easiest way to answer a question like that in a situation like this... don't! Hiding once again behind the mask of feigned excitement, "Oooh, you think there is more stuff like this around here? My employer will be fascinated by things like this. It will help him complain less about his servants' performance in their domestic duties! Oooh, you're really smart so you should come, I'll help you explore!"

Around here? Did he really just say he found the spice grinder around here? The idea that this stranger seemed to have stumbled upon something Meloli had only seen once before, and then it hadn't been her find either, right around here where she had been searching since she was a kid made her feel slightly sick. Plus the fact that he didn't even search for himself or for information into the past that no one remembers but instead for some as yet unnamed employer made it all seem worse in her young, idealistic mind. Despite all of that, and the tiny prickles of warning firing off in her belly, she couldn't refuse an offer to explore with him. "Sure, we can explore together, but we probably should set some ground rules first. Whatever you find is yours and whatever I find is mine unless we decide otherwise at the time." She knew treasure hunting could get a bit sticky when there are multiple people involved, and even more so when those people have very different motives.

Nodding in agreement, "Anything I find, you can inspect to see if it's an item you've really been searching for. If it is, you can keep it. I don't really mind. You'd probably have better use for half of the things anyway. My employer likes battle trophies and tomes and the like. I found this one shiny shield, but it was like a mini-shield ornament (he is describing a badge). It was kinda cool to be honest and he really liked it. It matched an accessory that some of the uniformed soldiers of the Relic Era wore. It only seems like one army wore them from what I have seen in pictures and paintings." I smile at her and extend my hand towards the ruins to allow her to lead the way.

Looking around, I scan the area to be sure that there are no bandits or wild animals in the nearby area. My primary mission is always at the forefront of my mind, which is to keep this one safe, observe her exploration skills and secure her agreement to a meeting with my current employer. Besides, I was growing weary of this charade already. Had she met me as a boy then perhaps, this would have been more genuine, but at this point in my life, I would rather be hunting down targets. I suppose the consolation is that I have generally found enjoyment in going on this little explorations with other researchers and such. While battle, strategy, and intelligence gathering stand to be my forte, I am a student of learning as well. There is always an opportunity to learn about something when exploring ruins. Hell, I already learned about this nifty way to conceal and dispense poison herbs to an unsuspecting target whose residence has been infiltrated.

"Oh, well that sounds like a very good agreement to me. I could even search through my personal collection to see if I have anything close to what you described that might gain you some favor with your employer." Of course she knew she had one or two things like the miniature shield he spoke of. On the few occasions she had been allowed to go to the mainland and explore (with a heavily chaperoned group of course), there had been a couple included with her haul of relics. She had no use for them so if they would help this kind stranger she would be happy to give them up.

As he extends his hand toward the ruins she had so recently abandoned, Meloli turns to lead the way back up the dunes to the first crumbling wall. "I haven't gotten farther than this corner over here. I only get to dig this site on my days off when the weather cooperates so it's slow going. What I've learned so far is that this was most likely a single family home before the dawn, much like the one you probably passed further up the beach..." The one where she lives but isn't mentioning. "... and this corner here was probably their food preparation area. I found the blades of knives, their handles not preserved well enough to stand the elements, and some other items the scholars believe to be used in cooking." She couldn't say anything about the rest of the ruined structure because she hadn't gotten that far, but it was evident that she was proud of her partially excavated kitchen corner.

Nodding my head, I follow behind her and listen as she speaks. I don't quite understand what the noble wanted with this one but I wasn't about to question it as that is not my role. Looking over the woman I note that she is attractive sure, but she does not seem to be an expert explorer or savant on relics, so what exactly is the draw. Maybe she is like me when I was younger, being given a chance to prove herself based on the potential that others see inside of her. My attention perks up at the mention of blades. She describes this place as a residence, which I find to be interesting as it is decently sized. Giving her another opportunity to enlighten me, I inquire, "So what else have you learned about the people of the Relic Era? Can we figure out what they were like?"

There he goes again getting her on a subject she is all too willing to talk about. As she settles down in the spot she'd abandoned earlier, when she'd taken a break for sustenance, the young woman idly sifts the sand she hadn't yet explored through delicate fingers. "The most important thing i have learned about them is that they were not all that different from us. Sure they had odd tools and strange objects littering their homes but were they to explore our homes, wouldn't they be able to say the same thing? They prepared food in a certain room, they lived in single family units in structures of this size, some say they did as well in the larger structures on the mainland but I have yet to be able to authenticate that information for myself, their rudimentary tools are very similar to our own leading me to believe that they may have started out in a world much like ours and advanced from there to create the oddities that have been found. All in all I think they were just normal people living normal lives until something happened to change or end those lives suddenly."

She has an interesting & very optimistic view of the people of the Relic Era. There was a good amount of truth in her logic tho I had to admit. Much of our lifestyles seemed very similar to our own so there is a good possibility that she is correct in her assumptions. My natural calm and cold tone emerges briefly as I respond, "It is no rumor. The communities of Medius are built from such locations. The Core of Medius has very large buildings that approach the Realm of the Sky People." I fall silent for a moment while looking around. "Why are u searching here?" I ask in the happy go lucky tone. The faster I found a challenging location the quicker I would be "forced" to reveal my true self & I could move things along. "If you want real fun and you wanna find real treasure, you gotta go to real ruins. You've gotta know of a cool spot around here, right?" I put on the boyish smile while a quick breeze flutters thru my hair. Thankfully, the scent of blood & combat is absent from my follicles today. That would definitely make things more difficult.

When his first question left his mouth, Meloli turned up a confused look but allowed him to continue. By the time he was done talking she was trying to keep her attitude in check. She'd hoped he wouldn't turn out to be one of 'those' kind of relic hunters but based on his words that is exactly what he seemed to be. Trying not to sound too upset or bitchy, the young woman shrugged her shoulders and shook her head. "These are 'real' ruins to me. This place used to house a family of people that I am interested in learning more about. The items they used to make their lives easier or functional are real treasures to me. I stopped looking for gold or gems a long time ago, when I gave up childish pursuits. Then I embraced the importance of finding out all I could about the people who here before and why they aren't anymore." Hopefully that would be enough to make her stance on the issue clear. She didn't do any of this to try and make herself a fortune, like many relic hunters did, she was more interested in the knowledge.

I look around and smile, "There is PLENTY of gold & gems and other baubles in this area. That is not where most of the real ruins are. There are two main locations that have taught me much, it is Medius' districts that are close to the Core and there are places north of here that show to me real ruins that may answer your questions. This place only shows u that they are not that different from us, the places I am talking about shows two VERY different people clashed together. There are things that even in not knowing exactly what they are, they do not fit together at all. I am more curious about things of that nature. Sure, gems and crafting materials are nice and they can allow to purchase better and more equipment and get u a team together, but u will grow bored of just that. So, u should not dismiss a treasure expedition as a childish pursuit. I tried operating without financial backing. You don't get very far." My explanation of the clashing culture ruins would be pretty animated. I would seem pretty nonchalant about the entire debate of knowledge vs treasure hunting. The attitude in her voice would not stir or offend in the least bit. It would seem that perhaps there was an unpleasant encounter with a fortune focused adventurer. Perhaps, I will inquire about that later.

By the time he finished speaking, the young woman felt slightly guilty for immediately coming to the conclusion that he was nothing more than a treasure seeker adamant about finding fortune and fame for himself, but not fully. She still suspected that there was something about him she shouldn't like, or shouldn't trust, because of his odd interests and explanations. Though much like the cat in the old wives tale, her curiosity would not be dampened by stirrings of forebodings, her inquisitive mind always wins out in the end over her better judgment. "My superiors do not look kindly on students traveling to any ruins in Medius without their supervision but I would like to possibly see the other sites you mentioned, the ones north of here." That was all she could give him right now, her opinions when it comes to the last part of what he said, the not counting treasure expeditions as childish pursuits and operating without financial backing not getting her very far, would be mulled over much longer and reserved for later. Perhaps her mind would change on those topics once she could see for herself what he meant by there being evidence of two different kinds of peoples clashing against one another. All manner of people were different, but how could he tell there were two factions distinct enough to tell their difference from artifacts, and did their clashing lead to the events that caused the demise of everyone that had been here before? Those questions were at least worth checking out.
