..Lethe, the Cryosamurai:
......Pit, pit, pit. The soft patter of a steady rain filled the ears of a young village soldier, the skies greying as a storm system bared down upon the region. Deep within the forest like this rain storms usually don't amount to much more than a temperature drop. The ground is often thirsty enough to soak up whatever rain water comes down and the high canopy and thick branches and leaves protects the village from too heavy of an aquatic assault.

......This young village soldier, the samurai known as Lethe, enjoyed the smell of wet dirt when the rain came. It was a nice shake up from the usual smell of sun baked grass, tamed animals, and maize. In fact, he thought himself to be lucky to have been able to have patrol during the time of a storm. As the rainfall began to come down harder, the young warrior continued his patrol around the perimeter of the forest. It had, and would, prove to be an uneventful day as far as criminals and defense went, but he supposed being in attendance of such a naturally beautiful event was well worth the boredom.

......It was either exciting or boring, never anything in between. That was a soldier's life.

......It's just too bad this day was the latter.

..Job Thread: A Soldier's Life
..Lethe, the Cryosamurai:
......It had all happened so fast, and now Lethe was in pursuit. It had just been another day of guard duty, and the young soldier had led a relatively eventful post until just recently. Lethe had began his route through the village markets when he'd spotted suspicious activity. Following his hunch, he followed the target, watching them for any false move they may make to break the law. Sure enough, they had. In a spam of just a few seconds this person, who Lethe could only assume was a young boy, had managed to pick pocket three different people in a row. Sure, he had yelled at the boy and told him to stop, but in typical criminal fashion that simply made him run faster.

......Lethe was in hot pursuit. He actually felt sorry for the boy, as there was no way he could have known just how fast his pursuer was. The white haired samurai possessed a much longer stride and longer legs than most people, which allowed him to outrun most anyone. This case wasn't an exception, and after jumping over and dodging several criminal induced obstacles along the way, Lethe came within distance and dove on top of the fleeing suspect.

......He was brought down easily enough, and after spinning the person over he saw it was just a teenage boy. Why he'd be stealing was beyond the cryosamurai, as the villege of the moon was a rather well off village as far as it and it's people went; there was almost nobody that went wanting. Perhaps he was in it for the rush, or showing up for friends hidden in the brush. Lethe didn't care one way or the other, and after recovering the stolen goods he brutishly brought the pickpocket back to town, where he'd spend the next several weeks in the local jail.

......Laws were the only thing that kept this world from descending into darkness. Upholding those laws was just another day on the job.

..Lethe, the Cryosamurai:
......Another day, another day. That was the saying that Lethe had heard so many times throughout his life from people that had rather mundane or boring jobs. In some small way he was thankful that he wasn't a worker in some tedious, soul crushing job. Then again, in many ways the life of a soldier was as soul crushing as anything else. Some days were better than the other but he didn't have much to complain about.

......Except for assignments like this, anyway. For tonight's patrol Lethe had been assigned a stationary guard position outside of the village meeting hall. Inside of those doors the upper leadership of the Order, as well as leadership of the village were pent up in there having a meeting. The topics of the meeting varied, be it a simple discussion on policies to something as extreme as how to handle neighboring villages. The Village of the Moon had never been a warring tribe, but some days Lethe was not so sure the leadership wouldn't do that. Times were hard, and new discoveries were being made. In many ways it was every man for themselves, and whoever had the power would survive.

......Hmm, must be nice to make decisions like that. As he stood there, guarding a meeting where he wasn't to be stationed inside, he decided that he'd work to a goal of running the Order.

......But that was for the future. Tonight was just another boring guard post. It was all part of the job.

..Lethe, the Cryosamurai:
......Now this was more like it. That was one of the few things on Lethe's mind as he and an associate of his crept slowly to the edge of the thick brush that lined the edges of the dirt road. The road was a few miles outside of the edges of teh village, and they had been tracking a small band of thieves for the past few hours. It had happened over the past few days, but a string of break ins and muggings had gone down during the night. The source of those crimes was a mystery for the longest time; until one of their men had been caught. He was green for a thieve, probably a new recruit, and had made the mistake of trying to mug an off duty soldier. He didn't put up much of a fight and was taken into custody, and then quickly revealed where the rest of his gang was.

And that is why Lethe and his fellow soldier were here now. There were three other thieves and they had a small camp in this area, and Lethe had come across it. If there was one extra advantage to having powers over the rest of the human race, it was the fact that tasks like these were made all the more easier. Where his associate had wanted to rush in, Lethe had him wait, and the young samurai muttered out a spell. The three were sitting around a fire, telling stories and planning their next days activities, but that ended quickly. All three of them quickly found themselves frozen to the ground, one after the other. With a strong sense of smug satisfaction, Lethe revealed himself from the brush. He simply walked over and struck each of them in the back of the head with the hilt of his blade.

With them unconscious they'd be an easy carry back to the village. There was always more room to detain them. And considering he'd just captured three thieves - well, four - it had been, all in all, a productive day.

..Lethe, the Cryosamurai:
......Music touched the returning party, music full of gaiety and life. Not only did flutes play, but so did horns, lutes, and drums. As Lethe and the others entered, they also heard voices raised in merriment and noted light upon light darting about the village tavern. There still may be problems outside of the village, but hopelessness no longer enshrouded the forest people. There were people - live people - celebrating in the streets. They were everywhere. Not the pallid specters of before, but breathing folk in flowing, colorful clothes more like those donned by the desert inhabitants rather than the more dour and formal kimono wear normally seen in the village. They laughed, they danced, they sand, all things of life.

......The celebration was for good reason. This was the sacred festival of the moon that was put on the village each year. This was the largest celebration of the year and gave thanks to their gods for another bountiful year. Lethe himself was so enthralled by being around living people again because of where he'd just been. Part of the tradition said that a band of the village soldiers were required to go out to the surrounding ruins and cemeteries and combat any evil spirits they found. In typical fashion they came across nothing - that the others could see anyway. Lethe was well aware the entire time of a wide variety of spirits, both evil and otherwise. He did well enough to pretend he didn't see them, doing whatever was possible to avoid confrontation with them while around the others. It was a part of his job, but he hated going there for the pure reason he couldn't fight back.

......But, it was now time to celebrate. It had been a long day.

..Lethe, the Cryosamurai:
......It was the worst day of the week. Or rather, it was the worst day of the week for a soldier of the Village of the Moon in Lethe's humble opinion. For today was the day, as with every week, he was expected to learn. This wasn't just learn in the conventional sense of picking up ones sword and hacking away at the nearest inanimate object turned target. No, this was the day the guard expected him to open up a book or thrice, takes the knowledge that was bound between it's weary pages, and add that to his ever growing (or expected to be) intelligence.

What was that saying? All work and no education make Jack a dull boy? Ah, he was sure that wasn't the actual saying and he was also equally sure he wasn't sure who that Jack fellow was, but he was still none the less annoyed at what he was having to do. Still, if the guard asked him to do something he typically went along with it, if for anything else the fact that by doing what he was told he'd be able to eventually progress through the ranks. One must be a model soldier, yes.

And so, he opened the book, a wealth of knowledge at his fingertips. "Chapter one, Negotiation Etiquette and the Proper Cavity Searching of Suspects."

Lethe groaned. Suddenly this didn't seem so prudent.

......Being a soldier wasn't all about fighting, and killing, and tracking down criminals for the common good of everyone. No, sometimes there were other important things, like reading, learning, and ... escorting! Yes, the ultimate past time of the village soldiers - or rather a running joke among them for how utterly useless it seemed most of the time - was the escorting of villagers safely from village to work site. This was important because there were several farms and other similar sites outside of the village that often times needed a form of rudimentary protection for the workers.

......Today was one of those days where Lethe was expected to help in such a way. From early morning he'd been out on the Dai'lin farmlands about a mile from the village. It was established in a clearing in the canopy were the sunlight could pour through. It provided ample room and light for the crops to grow, and from beginning to end of their shift Lethe was expected to protect them. The walk there was uneventful save for the slaying of a single wolf. Who knows that that beast was thinking charging a soldier by it's lonesome. At the very least it'd provide some beggar or the insects with a meal.

......With a heavy sigh, Lethe continued his patrol around the farm. It was hot, humid, and bright. It was one of the worst days weather wise for the young man, and he was stuck outside working. Figures.

..Lethe, the Cryosamurai:
......High above in the daytime sky, the fiery sun shone upon the forest, peeking through whatever opening it could find to bathe the forest floor in a stream of warmth. Lethe never was one to be a fan of the heat, and this was only multiplied once he'd come into his powers. On this day he made special note to avoid any spots that had a particularly strong standing of light. In a way he played a game with himself, avoiding those rays of light as he made his rounds on patrol. Unfortunately for him today wasn't turning out to be a particular exciting day on patrol, and he was left to entertain himself was trying to make people believe he was diligently on duty.

It was a simple enough game to pass the time by ones self - if that's what you wanted to call it. Lethe continued along his given path, passing a group of children who were hard at play amongst themselves, sprinting, running, and yelling. Apparently one of them was a forest monster, while the others were knights chasing down their hunt. The sight amused the young samurai, and made him think back to his own childhood. Well, the parts of it he wanted to remember anyway.

It speaks volumes when children playing is the most entertaining thing you see while on patrol.

..Lethe, the Cryosamurai:
......The distinctive sound of shattering glass echoed in the halls of the village tavern, spilling it's mind numbing properties along the wooden floors. The yelling of two men erupted, and the sound of additional breaking bottles and snapping pieces of wood all melded together. It was the typical sound of a bar room brawl, familiar to anyone that ever spent more than a few hours in those kinds of places. For the other patrons this meant a disturbance in their attempt to relax, but for the soldier that was stationed inside it meant there was a job to do. For soldiers that were less than capable it may have been more a concern, but for someone of Lethe's abilities this was nothing more than pure fun.

......After the bad luck of the last few days duty wise, it was nice to have a bit of excitability back in the job. Lethe had been stationed in the corner of the tavern, where it'd alternate ends of the building and make his rounds around the outside area as well. Upon hearing the first thrown glass the young soldier had jumped down from the second level into the brawl. There were only two men involved, arguing over what amounted to a very meager debt of goods, while their friends and acquaintances cheered them on. Normally Lethe would simply break them up, have them pay for what they'd broken, and send them on their merry way, but one of these men was particularly stupid.

......While on immediately stopped himself and backed away, the second instead turned his anger on Lethe. The result was a very lackluster attempt to attack him while in a drunken stupor, which was very harshly responded to with a violent blow to the face with Lethe's blade hilt. Blood sprayed back as the man's nose was broken, and he fell to the floor in a heap, sobbing to himself. Truth be told part of Lethe felt bad for doing that, but he couldn't help himself when it came to drunken idiots like that.

......Two other guards came to drag the man off to the village lock up for the night, and the soldier simply walked back to his station, taking the now jailed man's shot in the process.

......The gathered crowd cheered and waved as Teotl and the others marched through the village earthen streets. The young start up, Lethe, was a part of his group. It looked to the young soldier as if every citizen of the village had come to show their appreciation for him and his fellows, a true display of adoration for their duty. Never in his short career had he imagined such acknowledgement from others. Remembering back to when he first joined he recalled Captain Teotl's speech upon his acceptance. He had warned him from his first day that a soldier's life was a generally harsh, unappreciated one, but this moment made every past indignity more than worth it.

......The occasion for such an event was the village's yearly festival where they showed appreciation for their armed forces, or specifically the Order of the Moon. Since the days of the village's founding they had diligently protected it from invasion, and secured it's borders. It was only natural that they would take a day out of the year and show their respect to both current and past members of the division.

......Even if it was just one day of recognition, it was well worth the yearly wait in Lethe's eyes.

......Upon the dawning of the new world there was certainly a wide variety of lost arts that the denizens of the new world were none too privy to, or at least not exactly honed. Even though Lethe had only been alive a short 20 years, which just so happened to fall in line with the time everyone's memories pertained to, he was keenly aware of the fact. The fact that if there were times before the 'start of days', that they surely had a better handle over things like meditation. Yes, meditation. He was sure that it was a lost art, and that it's primitive state most people practice was little more than a shell of it's former glory.

......What did this have to do with being a soldier? Lethe asked himself that several times after Tetol had ordered him to meditate. The captain's reasoning behind it was allow soldiers to become one with their surroundings, which included their village, their people, and their very enemies. The young soldier wasn't sure how true all of that was, but the time of the day he was always allotted (more like ordered) to meditate gave him a time of relation more than anything. It was true that there were times he truly felt as if he'd achieved something, but that was an exception more than the rule.

......This time, he just hoped he didn't fall asleep.

......Judging by the noticed they'd received it was a massacre. It was evening, and the sun was setting in the distance giving the area a new chilled temperature. Lethe and his companions had been on patrol in the village when a frantic villager had ran to them, shouting something about a murder. At least he thought he was talking about murder, as the man was so frantic it was hard to make out anything. They followed the poor soul to the location he said he'd seen it at. It was a small farmhouse a mile or more outside of the village, and Lethe didn't need to go inside to realize what had happened. The stench of death had already reached his nose.

......Entering the house brought forth a grisly sight. Blood stained walls and floors accented the shredded body parts strewn in the home. There was no sign of whatever did it, but the blood and gore gift it had left behind was more than enough of a reminder of it's presence. Who could do such a thing? He was almost certain it wasn't a human, and instead some sort of beast. On one side of the room was a painting, one of who he could only assume was the family that once lived here. An old married couple and what appeared to be a grandchild. They were still here ... or what was left of them.

......It was days like this he regretted joining the Order.

Anything from being a capable swordsman for the defense of the village, to the ability to escort citizens from the village to other areas, all the way to breaking up bar fights and going on simple patrol. One of the duties Lethe never fathomed having to perform was that of a tax collector. It wasn't a typical tax, and was instead an offering of food for the good of the village, as evening meals were often eaten all together in the grand hall. For some reason this didn't seem like an appropriate job for a soldier, especially considering everything else he'd done for the village. Couldn't they find a recruit to do this?

......But no matter, he presumed that by doing this he'd eventually gain recognition from it. Maybe it was some sort of test, having him perform a meager job like this to see how he would react; to see if he'd approach it with apathy or put forth his best applied effort. That was a distinct possibility, since he was sure that he was close to a promotion and as such would need to demonstrate leadership abilities.

......Whatever the true cause of his current predicament, Lethe trekked on, traveling to each village hut and collecting the daily tax.

..Lethe, the Cryosamurai:
......Today was one of those truly unique days as a soldier for Lethe and his comrades in the village of the moon. Out of the many things he was assigned to do on the days after days as a soldier, this was perhaps (while the most peaceful in most cases) the most interesting of them all. Today he was assigned as part of a scouting group that would go ahead and scout the remaining areas outside of the village. In addition to revealing new areas for their maps, it'd give them a capable scout of the surrounding area for any threats or potential things that could be used for their own gain.

It was actually an assignment that would take more than one day. The first day was simple enough, as the group he was in along with others moved out of the village and into the wilderness before them. The sights and sounds of their trips beginning was untamed, and Lethe knew he'd have to prepare himself for anything while on this particular mission. The left upon sunrise and walked until sundown, where they set up camp in preparation of another day of scouting.

......The sun rose over the tall tree line of the northwest forests, shining upon the second day of Lethe's unit's expedition. The first day they had gone north from the village, exploring the wilderness and thick forests the expanded as far as the eye could see. The first day proved to be uneventful, but would the second day fail to deliver upon the promise of excitement? Unfortunately, it would in most respects unless any of them were the kind of person that simple enjoyed the views of nature.

From morning until afternoon there was a mundane amount of attention grabbing aspects; after all forest can only look so much different. Where the expectation for wild untamed animals to provide excitement had been, it became evident that beasts so not used to humans wouldn't so readily come near them. So, the group continued their trek north, fighting a mighty wind storm that blew over the area they were traversing at one point. The wind was so strong it had uprooted several trees in the area, but the effect was like pulling a few strands of straw out of an entire pile: not much of a difference. Other than that, it was a dull day.

......The third day dawned with about as much promise as the others, which unfortunately for Lethe meant that he didn't have all that much to look forward to. At least this is what he assumed would happen considering the transgressions of the past few days. The morning, however, began with a bang as the group itself was attacked by a band of ... well, the only way to describe them would have been a barbaric primitive species of human. Lethe had never seen anyone like these people in his life, as they had a thick layer of bushy hair covering their body and spoke in strange grunts and growls.

Whoever they were they decided that the scout group's food would be a good enough reason to attack them and attempt to steal it. Of course, being a group that had never dealt with samurai before they were ill prepared to deal with the combat abilities of Lethe and his comrades, and they quickly dispatched all of them - without sustaining any casualties themselves - with decisive blows from their katanas. Once the battle had ended and the corpses lay about, Lethe had taken a clump of hair as a souvenir. If anyone asked, he discovered these creatures and would be the one to name them.

..Lethe, the Cryosamurai:
......The fourth day of the excursion wasn't quite as action packed as the day before. Hell, Lethe wasn't even sure just how many things would be more exciting than chopping up a bunch of hairy men that tried to steal your food. Part of him wondered how a people so primitive could even exist, since the world itself was plenty primitive by most standards. Oh well, they were still plenty squishy for the end of his blades.

Taking a diversion from their typical northern path, the excursion group began going east in preparation of their loop back to the village. Along the route they discovered many landmarks, including a wide variety of different types of plants and rock formations, as well as a beautiful waterfall that dominated the terrain of the area. You could hear the low grumble of the falls from the distance, and the closer you go the more damp the air became and a cool mist would coat your body depending on the angle. It was all a rather stunning sight and made the trip all that more interesting, even if there hadn't been much fighting going on.

In truth most of his unit was happy there wasn't any fighting, as that meant they'd have an easier time living longer lives. Lethe, on the other hand, hungered for any combat he could come across.

..Lethe, the Cryosamurai:
......It was nearing the end of the week, and that mean Lethe was drawing in on the final day of his unit's exploratory excursion into the distant lands from the village of the moon. Seeing as how modern history as men know it only went back twenty years, there was little to no exploration outside of the already established colonies and villages. This provided an available job for those opportunistic enough to take on the endeavor. Lucky for Lethe he'd been automatically volunteered by his own allegiance, and through his participation they were able to add so much to their own village maps.

At least, he liked to think he had the most to do with it.

The survey team left the glistening waterfall, trekking away from the damp environment of the woods near the waterfall and heading towards the humid, sticky portion of the forest closer to their village. Ugh, Lethe hated the heat, and especially heat like this. What this next to final day lacked for in combat it certainly made up for in annoying weather. It was at that moment that he was fairly sure that if mother nature was truly a woman, he was going to find her via hunting her down, and he would then beat her with a big stick until she ceased dropping such hot weather wherever he was.

..Lethe, the Cryosamurai:
......The final day of the excursion had finally dawned upon them. It had been a long week, traveling through the uncharted forests attempting to flesh out the Village of the Moon's knowledge of the territory, and to provide them with a more valuable handle upon the landscape. It'd open up profitable trade routes as well as strategic points should they ever enter any conflicts. And there was a third priority, which was giving them some way of allowing villagers to know where to avoid when traveling out in the woods. After all, they wouldn't want anyone else running into those hairy bipeds that tried to steal their stuff a couple days ago.

......The familiarity of the coming trees let Lethe know that he was just outside of the village. And it probably sounds strange: a kind of tree being recognizable in a forest. But it was the truth. Having spent his entire life in such a place allowed him to pick up on such things. The unit entered the village with little fanfare, most of the village probably not knowing where they'd actually gone. But, Lethe was given the task of taking the newly mapped territory and taking it to the elders to have developed for the rest of the village. All in all, while it had been fairly run of the mill, it had been a valuable week.

......Today was the first day Lethe was back in the village after the week long excursion into the unknown. Supposedly that was something exciting compared to the life the other villagers had in the village, but truth be told Lethe didn't see what was so special about it. It was more of a sight seeing trip than anything and it involved a minimal amount of combat. It was more of the same sight wise, since trees weren't exactly at a premium in this area. Still, it was good to be home, even if it was a small primitive ish village like this one.

......The first day back inside the village, or "on the job" so to speak, didn't bring any excitement that Lethe had hoped. Now that he thought about it, it seemed to be a very rare occurrence that there was any real excitement going down. Perhaps he was doing it wrong, this job. In a way he wished the village would declare war upon another, at least then that'd get the blood pumping. But, he still had duties to do, and without much gripe Lethe continued his patrol of the village, a painstaking beacon of justice. Or so he liked to think.

..Lethe, the Cryosamurai:
......Shielding his eyes from the glare of the sun above, Lethe grunted at the heat around the area. Usually the canopy provided an adequate shield from the sun, but for whatever reason today it was particularly lackluster in it's job. If it weren't for the villager that came running up to the young soldier, he may have had time to dwell upon this, but he instead had work to do it seemed. The villager was needing help. Apparently there was a creature in the nearby pond the people used for fishing and as a water source, and it had the people terrified for their well being.

Reacting the same as any self respecting soldier would do, Lethe sprung into action. He followed the villager down the narrow, long path through the forest that led to the pond, entering the area. He immediately noticed two other villagers that were there as well, sitting on the banks and looking scared towards the water. The one that had gotten him pointed, explained what had happened, and backed away.

Now, on land this would be dealt with one way, but out here it was another thing entirely. Water was easily frozen to ice, thus making it that much easier. From where he was standing he could see a fin gliding across the water, no doubt an indication of some beast lurking. Judging by the fact it had just gotten in there and hadn't been there in the past, it must be both land accessible and water. All the more reason to stop it.

Lethe halted any of his movements, and concentrated on the gliding fin. With a swift application of his ice affinity, Lethe froze the water in a solid block around it. The fin stopped, and the chunk of ice bobbed in the water. Swimming over, Lethe pushed the block to shore and had a look at what he'd caught. Sure enough it was some sort of predator, looking like some sort of giant amphibian than anything else. Whatever it was, Lethe took it with him to town, where it'd be locked away, allowed to unthaw, and then studied.

..Lethe, the Cryosamurai:
......Over the past few weeks Lethe had been able to gain quite a reputation among the people of the village. So much so that in more ways than one he was confident that a promotion was soon to be in the works. It made sense, after all, considering all he'd done for the village. He diligently fended off bandits on a weekly basis, assisted in the slaying of a murderous band of beasts, slayed a demon with the help of his possession, mapped out the uncharted regions of the forest, and assisted with the every day duty of patrol all around the village. Yes, he was one of the rising stars among the ranks of the village guard.

Of course, that isn't to say that this new found fame saved him from any regular duties. No, it was quite the opposite. Take today for instance, where he found himself standing idly on guard duty in the village market. Just the other day he'd purchased a fine claymore from one of the traveling merchants. It was a magnificent blade, and well worth the probably inflated price he'd paid for it, so today he took special note to ensure that they merchant would have a safe visit in the village. For some reason (as if he couldn't figure out why) Lethe was sure most people wouldn't enjoy the man's inflated prices. May as well protect him anyway; and so he did.

The group he was hunting, a band of men four in number, was a group of bandits that had been plaguing the outskirts of the village for the past two days. He'd been assigned the mission of bringing them to justice late last night, and had spent all his time since they honing in on said prey. He'd set off immediately from the village, using all of the abilities he knew to bring these men to justice.

Their trail wasn't hard to follow, as it led out of town in a simple way. Nobody said that bandits were smart people. Without giving them any time to react, Lethe sprang from the brush, using his glacial abilities to freeze the poor souls in place. Due to the nature of their crimes; all violent, Lethe had no interest in taking prisoners back to the village. Well, it was that and a combination of him being a rather foul mood today. This day would be the first day he'd draw blood with his claymore, and with a series of quick strikes the men all lay dead around his feet.

It may have been a blood scene, but it would ensure the village's safety.

......His claymore had quickly become a tool of the trade over the past few days, proving it's usefulness without question. It would prove to be one of the wisest investments Lethe had ever made in his relatively short life. While it was true that he'd been trained in the ways of a samurai the majority of his life, he found wielding a larger weapon such as a claymore fit his abilities much better. In comparison with his other soldier and village of the moon brethren, he was very tall and broad, and the sword itself he'd used his entire life, a katana, was small compared to him.

......The claymore, on the other hand, fit him quite nicely. In fact, just this morning he'd split the skulls of several beasts using the massive weapon. The beats, a form of rabid wolf, had sprang an attack on villagers in the farmlands. A short trek , a few powerful swings, and spilled blood later resulted in one of many outstanding performances for Lethe's new claymore. As a soldier he decided from this point on he'd be a unique facet in the village's force, wielding a claymore full time instead of a katana.

......Perhaps in the future he should name it!
